For The Kids By George Museum

APPLE BUTTER FESTIVAL – Things To Do Berkeley Springs, WV

This fun and interactive museum explores the history and impact of George Washington and his time in the Eastern Panhandle. Children will experience what life was like in part of the nations first frontier and learn about the rich railroad history of the area. They will also experience a virtual trip down the Washington Heritage trail which traces the steps George Washington made through the Eastern Panhandle and his work as a young surveyor in the area.

The fun starts in the centralized information station which contains the GW Giles Shay Locomotive which is a model of the type of locomotive used in the timber industry from 1880-1945. A large trail wall map contains information about George Washingtons travels in the area. From here, three paths exist to explore red, yellow, and green.

The red trail takes you across a pedestrian bridge up and over the working tracks and station below. It provides excellent views of the many historic building around the rail yard and is especially fun when a real trail comes through and under the bridge. The rail yard first opened in 1848 and has seen many historic events such as the first national labor strike and destruction of the roundhouse, tracks, and surrounding shops by Stonewall Jackson during the Civil War. On this path, you can experience loading and unloading both freight and passenger cars using the manifest lists.

An admission fee of $6 per person is charged for this museum.

Visit Ellens Homemade Ice Cream

225 Capitol Street Website

Is there anything better than ice cream after a 7 hour road trip? I think not! I had to stare at the menu for 5 minutes just to make my choice. Coconut ice cream was the BEST choice, by the way. The atmosphere in Ellens was so cozy, they even had a little area set up for the little ones.

Aside from homemade treats, they also have a lunch menu and coffee. Ricky had a drool-worthy grilled cheese with a black bean burger added to it. I can imagine its quite the place to be in the summer!

Whether seeking outdoor adventures, such as whitewater rafting and hiking in stunning West Virginia’s state parks, or enjoying a classic state fair and exploring caves, families with kids of all ages will find plenty of fun things to do in West Virginia. We knew little of this mountainous southern state beyond the refrain of John Denver’s anthem….”almost heaven, West Virginia.” But we couldn’t agree more. What we found was a refreshingly authentic travel experience, steeped in nature and sweetened by welcoming locals. Our overwhelming impression is just the absolute greenness of the sate: thick forests of trees, so many trees, and lush, dense greenery. More than three-quarters of the state is covered by forest.

Learn About West Virginias Coal Industry

Learn about West Virginias coal industry through a guided tour of Exhibition Coal Mine, one of Beckleys most intriguing tourist attractions. Although the experience is certainly child-friendly, it does highlight the harsh realities of working in the coal mines. The mine is only open to the general public between April and November from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can book a private tour for 15 people or more during the winter by calling 256-1747, depending on the weather.

Adults pay $22, seniors pay $16, and children pay $12.50. Plan to spend at least 3 hours at Exhibition Coal Mine. In addition to the mine itself, theres a youth museum and other mining artifacts to explore. The temperature inside the mine is always 58 degrees, even on the hottest summer days, so dress accordingly.
