Things To Do In Savannah With Kids

Savannah is known for its antebellum architecture, beautiful parks, horse-drawn carriages and its majestic oak trees, draped romantically in Spanish moss. With only two days to visit, we wanted to find the best things to do in Savannah with kids.

We visited Savannah, GA as part of our family road trip around the Southern USA. We arrived in Savannah after 3 exhausting days in Orlando, visiting Disney World with our kids. We wanted to see the historic side of Savannah, but after the recent theme park madness, we also desperately craved some nature. Savannah delivered very nicely on both accounts.

Best Time To Visit Savannah

10 Things To Do In Savannah With Kids

Savannah can be enjoyed year-round, but it can become extremely hot and muggy during the summer. We went during the first week of April and aside from the bad flare-up of allergies, it was an incredible time. The weather was amazing and while there were a lot of people, not one placed seemed overwhelmingly crowded.

Where To Stay In Savannah Georgia

During my visit to Savannah, I stayed at the Springhill Suites Savannah Historic District. This new hotel is a great option for families because of the affordability and location.

My room, a king bed suite, included everything I needed including a couch, desk, microwave, refrigerator, shower, and table. The hotel offers a fitness center, outdoor pool, and jacuzzi. WiFi and a complimentary breakfast buffet is also included in the room rate.

The thing that most impressed me with the Springhill Suites Downtown Savannah Historic District was the two concierges I interacted with. Both were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. You could see that they were passionate about helping guests and loved the area.

Many of the popular activities in the area, including the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace and the Telfair Museums are within walking distance.

You can see more reviews of the hotel here.

Things To Do In Savannah Ga With Kids: Gryphon Tea Room

I read great things about the Gryphon Tea Room so we headed there for a light lunch. It is run by the Savannah College of Art and Design and is located in a historic building that was formerly a pharmacy.

The restaurant is small but absolutely gorgeous. I wish I had better things to say about the service and food but both were lackluster.

I think sticking with the tea menu is the way to go we ordered off of the lunch menu and had a bummer of sandwich. The tea service that we saw others having looked fantastic and there were lots of kids in the restaurant.

They had kid-friendly specialty drinks as well such as this blueberry lemonade. As long as you get better service and stick with their specialty of high tea I think it would be great.

Visit Wormsloe State Historic Site

Things to do in Savannah

Rated as the most beautiful spot in Georgia by Conde Nast Traveler, Wormsloe State Historic Site is an attraction not to be missed in dog-friendly Savannah!

At the entrance, youll be greeted by a spectacular live oak alleyway draped with Spanish moss. After purchasing your tickets and driving through the alley, you can park your car at the Visitors Center and begin your adventure.

Since pups are not permitted inside the buildings, Lady and I stuck to the hiking trails and historic sites dotted around the property. As you explore, youll come across 16th-century tabby ruins, a recreation of a small Colonial Town, and miles of trails that wind through the untouched Georgia wilderness.

We spent a full afternoon at Wormsloe and it was well worth the extra 20-minute drive from downtown, so dont leave this fantastic attraction off your itinerary!

With a shining reputation for hospitality and grace, Savannah has easily earned a spot on my list of top dog-friendly destinations!

Are you thinking about visiting this Lowcountry gem with your pup soon? What are you looking forward to the most? While youre preparing for your trip, dont forget to get your FREE copy of our Doggie Packing Checklist to help you stay organized.

Ice Cream At Leopolds

A must-do in Savannah is a visit to the award-winning Leopolds Ice Cream at 212 E. Broughton St. It has been open in this location since 1919 and some of their recipes are unchanged in over 100 years.

But be prepared the line often snakes out of the building and down the street!

We waited over 30 minutes for our ice cream and it was totally worth it. I had the Honey Almond & Cream and wow, was it fantastic. My daughter loved the Chocolate Chewies & Cream.

Your best bet for avoiding the line is to arrive in the first hour Leopolds is open 11 am to noon. You have permission to eat ice cream before lunch .

You can check out the Leopolds menu here.

Rent Bikes Or Take A Bike Tour

One thing we tried to do was rent a bike to tool around the city.

We wanted to rented a two-seat electric bike from Savannah on Wheels but the bike wasnt available the day we were there. I definitely suggest making a reservation in advance if you want to rent a specialty bike.

Or if you want someone to teach you about the sights while you view the city on wheels, take a historical bike tour like this one from Savannah on Wheels.

We definitely plan on doing this on our next visit to Savannah.
