Kid Friendly Things To Do In San Antonio Tx

San Antonio With Kids Stop #: Breakfast At Lulus Bakery

5 Fun Things To Do In San Antonio Texas With Kids

If you like unique dining experiences when you are traveling, then you have to add LuLus Bakery in downtown San Antonio to your itinerary. A little cafe, you would not give this nondescript restaurant a second glance, unless someone told you about the cinnamon roll.the Big-As-Your-Head Cinnamon Rolls. My kids loved ordering this monster roll, which was just as fluffy & sweet as you would want it to be.

Citysightseeing San Antonio Hop

One of the best ways to get acquainted with San Antonio is via the CitySightseeing Hop-on Hop-off Tour. You’ll get to see all the best of San Antonio, from the Riverwalk to Southtown. Along the way you’ll get informative and entertaining narration by professional guides who know all about the city’s most significant landmarks, neighborhoods, and hot spots. Enjoy the freedom to hop-on and off at any of the stops to explore some of the popular attractions along the way. It’s an ideal bus tour for families with small children. When the kids get bored, simply hop off to find something that will hold their attention!

Getting In: Hop-On Hop-Off San Antonio tour tickets are included as an option with the San Antonio Explorer Pass.

Lulus 3lb Cinnamon Roll

We actually walked here from where we parked to see the Alamo. It wasnt the best walk . . . but it was good to get our legs moving before and after enjoying this yummy cinnamon roll! It literally is 3 lbs and for a $1 extra you can get a whole cup of extra icing. I guess everything is bigger in Texas!

You can either go in to sit down and order or order one to go and sit outside to eat it. It is on a busy street and right by the highway so this isnt a scenic stop it is a stop for a 3 lb cinnamon roll!! The good news is that you can also order one by mail from their website!

San Antonio With Kids Stop #: Louis Tussauds Wax Works & Ripleys Museums

After the Alamo, we like to have a little fun. Across the street and wildly popular with the kids, are a few fun museums: Louis Tussauds Wax Works features over 200 life-like wax figures like Madonna, Oprah, Superman, & even the cast of Harry Potter. Ripleys Believe it or Not Odditorium has fun, interactive displays that bring out the kid in you. We played in the Hall of Illusions for a long time.

If you like to be frightened, check out the Ripleys Haunted Adventure a haunted house with live actors & special effects. The Guinness World Records has several themed galleries with interactive exhibits as well. All of these museums are fun & light hearted and my kids really enjoy them. Look for admission discounts at combined museums online or in hotel brochures.

The San Antonio River Walk

San Antonio Texas with Kids

While the Alamo is the most popular tourist attraction in Texas, the River Walk is the second more popular attraction. We have an entire post focused on things to do on the San Antonio River Walk but I definitely recommend taking the riverboat tour.

The guides are so knowledgeable, and the 30-minute ride is fun and educational. While you are exploring the River Walk area, youll see so many of these boats floating around. Its definitely one of the most popular things to do there.

The River Walk is located within walking distance of the Alamo, so you can do both in one day if you arent staying in the area. There are also lots of shops and restaurants that you can explore during your visit.

Theme Parks In And Around San Antonio

Kiddie Park

Next to the San Antonio Zoo is Kiddie Park, Americas oldest childrens amusement park. The old-fashioned style carnival rides feel super nostalgic. We were spent from an 80 degree day at the zoo, so we plan to visit Kiddie Park on our next trip.

SeaWorld

I know SeaWorlds are controversial. Poor whales

I included it because SeaWorld also has water rides and roller coasters for kids of all ages. In spring 2020, Texas longest and fastest wooden roller coaster will be opening at SeaWorld San Antonio. Plus SeaWorls are apparantly improving. Animal experiences, like swimming with dolphins, are still popular.

Six Flags Fiesta

If youre looking for a full size, action-packed theme park, Six Flags Fiesta might be more your speed. In addition to the popular thrill rides, Six Flags Fiesta has one of the worlds tallest pendulum rides. No thanks, though.

Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Resort

Just outside of San Antonio in New Braunfels is Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Resort. Schlitterbahns original section grew out of the banks of the local river, which was used to feed water tubes and chutes. Today, the resort has four parks, accessible by tram, and impressive water and amusement rides.

San Antonio With Kids Stop #: Doseum

Fueled on pure sugar, the next best place to take the kids is to San Antonios new childrens museum, the Doseum. My kids are big fans of museums that have a lot of hands-on-exhibits and all of them the 7 to the 15 year old agreed that this was one of the best they had ever visited. My kids climbed the treehouse, swam in the river, built airplanes & flew them in variety of ways, and spent almost 2 hours completing the entire spy academy. My older kids were a little hesitant being taken to a childrens museum but neither wanted to leave. In fact, they both recommend it to several of their friends already.

Graff 7a Ranch / South Texas Maize

Why youve got to go: Its a fifth-generation farm and ranch with a flagship fall corn maze event from mid-September to late November. And its just a short ride from San Antonio. That alone is a great reason to take the kids.

What to do: There is a seven-acre maze that is carved into stalks of corn and visitors have been trying to find their way out of this one since 2001 when it was established. Dont worry, the same crowd hasnt been stuck in some alternate reality puzzle. Theres also a hayride, pig races and Matter Corn Slide Mountain that keep the kiddies busy.

For: All ages.

Family Things to Do on the San Antonio River Walk, including boat tours, dining, shopping, and more.

On our recent spring break vacation, my family visited the San Antonio River Walk. This beautiful spot is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Texas, and is home to countless hotels, restaurants, and shops.

Located one story below street level, the San Antonio River Walk initially gained popularity during the 1968 Worlds Fair in San Antonio. Its a great home base for your San Antonio family vacation, and there are a number of hotels that you can stay in.

We chose to stay at the Omni La Mansion Del Rio, which is located in the busy section of the River Walk. If you plan to stay there, here are some family things to do on the San Antonio River Walk.

Disclosure: Our lodging and airfare was booked and paid for by us. I did visit this hotel and destination several years ago as part of a Cooper Tire press trip. All opinions are my own. San Antonio With Kids Stop #: Schilos Deli

Just a few blocks away is one of my favorite German Delis, Schilos Delicatessen . My mom introduced me to this spot as a child, and we always try to fit it in when we visit. Schilos has a traditional German menu schtznil, potato pancakes, and braughtwurst, as well as a great Deli menu to custom make your own sandwiches. And you cant visit without trying their homemade root beer some of the best I have ever tasted.

We love to go up to the top of the Tower of Americas when we visit San Antonio, as it is just such a fun view of the city. This last trip, we went right at 8:00 pm and we were able to catch the sunset from the top. My children loved it! The Tower of Americas also has a 4D movie that allows you to fly over the entire state lots of fun!

Should you bring your little kids to a historic battle site?

Given the fact that The Alamo itself is surprisingly small and tours are done at your own pace, The Alamo can be incredibly family friendly. Live demonstrations are also a great addition for older children.

The 750 foot observation tower and restaurant boasts impressive views of San Antonio. Built for the 1968 Worlds Fair, the tower is not modeled after, but came before, the more popular Seattle Space Needle.

Natural Bridge Caverns

Just outside San Antonio lies Natural Bridge Caverns, the largest cavern in Texas. Underground passages lead to impressive limestone structures and chambers that are hundreds, if not thousands, of years old.

The tour itself is about one hour and while the ground is damp and there are some inclines, its a pretty easy trek. Strollers are not permitted inside the caverns but I had no issue wearing our ten month old our two year old did the entire walk on his own, too.

Best Places To Stay In San Antonio

Very popular with local families, the San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa offers a beautiful hotel, spa, and a lazy-river pool when you just want to cool off in the summer and enjoy the beautiful Hill Country . Dads can enjoy the 36-hole golf course, kids can splash about in the six acre River Bluff water park and mom can relax in the luxury spa. Choose from seven restaurants to eat at. The resort also has a kids camp and theres campfire smores at night.

Its also super close to The River Walk and The Alamo. Also the Gunter Hotel San Antonio is right downtown and oozing with Texas charm.

If no hotel is kid-friendly enough for you, and you need your own house or apartment , Airbnb has some of our all-time favorite San Antonio charmers from a high-rise on the river to a spacious townhome to a craftsman style house with room for everyone.

The San Antonio Aquarium

Fun Things to Do in San Antonio Texas with Kids

Here at TravelingMom, we dont dance around things. That being said, Im a meh on the aquarium in San Antonio. When it was first created, there was a ton of negative feedback. Many people felt that the animals werent being properly cared for and that exhibits didnt adequately protect the animals from tiny exploring hands. There was a remodel and it appears that staffing has improved. Part of the reason people are either disappointed or elated with this place lies in the description. It isnt really an aquarium.

Roughly half of the aquarium contains marine life. The other half contains other species such as lemurs, kangaroos, and reptiles. Its more like an epic petting zoo than an aquarium. You can touch and feed multiple types of animals. Feeding costs extra. If you like closeup animal interaction and are willing to pay extra for it, youll be a happy customer.

TravelingMom Tip: The aquarium is 50,000 square feet. The building used to be a Dodge dealership. It can get extremely crowded, so try to visit on a weekday morning. It has been shut down by the local fire department in the past due to code violations for being over capacity. Avoid weekends.

San Antonio Attractions For Kids: Aquarium

Another one of the family friendly things to do in San Antonio is the San Antonio Aquarium which holds thousands of species of water-loving animals, fish and birds. For little children, there is a sting ray touch tank and older adventurous spirits can even go snorkelling with sting rays. There are daily scheduled interactions with such animals as sloths, lemurs and kangaroos so that everything you see at the San Antonio Aquarium isnt behind plate glass.

Want To Explore Some Caves

You have three options: in addition to Natural Bridge Caverns and Cascade Caverns you can also look into Cave without a Name, theyre a few miles apart outside Boerne

Cave without a Name is a smaller cavern in Boerne thats right outside San Antonio. You can get advanced tickets and skip the line

For Toddlers and smaller kids, it is small enough for him to walk around in and not as daunting of a task like Natural Bridge Caverns. If you have a baby, they should be worn in a carrier.

Cascade Caverns is a great spot for Camping, Trails and Wildlife along with hourly tours within the Caverns for small groups of 4-8 people. This is ideal for small kids.

San Antonio With Kids Stop #: Bus Tour

When you first arrive in a city, we always recommend a narrated bus tour to familiarize yourself with where you are & what attractions may interest you. I also love to learn the history of a city. There are several bus tours to choose from, including the Alamo Trolley or City Sightseeing Tours San Antonio. Most all have the same route and you can hop on and off to see the sites. We recommend hopping off at Market Square, the largest Mexican market outside of Mexico. You can grab a bite to eat, a frozen margarita, and do a bit of shopping at El Mercado. If you have older kids and are looking for a bit different type of tour, then check out the San Antonio Bike Tours or Segway Tours.
