Stand In Two States At Once On The Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge

The Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge is a 3,000-foot bridge that spans the Missouri River, connecting Nebraska with Iowa. You can acces this bridge from the Council Bluffs, Iowa side but it is much easier to reach on the Omaha side.

Park in the lot off Riverside Drive, near the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail building. This whole area is in the midst of a major rehab, but the building is still worth peaking into.

After walking the bridge to admire the views and get the obligatory standing in two states picture, families will be thrilled to know there is a splash pad near the base of the bridge. It is a great place to cool off and play during those blazing Midwestern summer days.

Other Good Things To Know About Midtown Crossing

One of the best things about Midtown Crossing is FREE. The parking, that is. The parking garage allow up to three hours of free parking. Just validate your ticket at any of the businesses at Midtown Crossing. I love this, as free parking is getting harder to come by, at least, in downtown Omaha.

Midtown Crossing also happens to be home to some of the best restaurants in Omaha, in my opinion. Though Im sure they wouldnt turn your kids away, Modern Love is ideal for a date night.

Family Night Out Activities In The Omaha Area

We talk a lot about enjoying the Omaha area, with its wonderful places to enjoy date night as a couple, its nearby romantic weekend getaway destinations, and its bars perfect for watching major sports games. However, we dont want to leave the kids out of the fun, especially since they play such a major role in our lives. And lets be honest sometimes the kid-centered activities are just as fun for adults to do, especially if it involves seeing the pure joy on your kids faces throughout the night.

Its pretty easy to find some fun outdoor, daytime activities to enjoy with your kids over the weekend, but it might be a little more difficult to think of things to do on a Friday or Saturday night. But alas, there are plenty of nighttime activities in the Omaha area that the whole family can enjoy! Therefore, we wanted to highlight a few of our favorites to spark some ideas for your next family night out.

Ramp up the excitement by writing each of these down on small pieces of paper and randomly selecting one from a jar each weekend. It will build up anticipation and make the activity that much more of a surprise for everyone even you!

Free Things To Do In The Old Market :

    1. From May to October, you have to bring the family down to the Old Market for the Omaha Farmers Market on Saturday mornings from 8 to about 12:30 p.m. Live music, samples, a balloon man , and great people watching, all for free.

And dogs. There are A LOT of dogs at the farmers market, if your kids love them.

The atmosphere is so lively, I know youll have fun. Read about the fun things to find at the Omaha Farmers Market!

    2. Youll find horse carriages parked in 11th and Howard in the Old Market, weather permitting, for much of the year. The carriage rides arent free, but kids love seeing the horses, so go check them out.

Last time I checked , rides started at $25. The most popular carriage is, of course, the one affectionately dubbed the Cinderella Carriage.

    3. Almost any time of day or night, youll find street musicians throughout the Old Market. Take your time and listen to one that you like with your kids.

My kids favorite thing to do is put money in the collection cup to show appreciation for the music.

    4. While youre walking around the place, there is a lot of unexpected art to see, especially on some of the old buildings. My old apartment building on 10th and Jackson has a neat lion fountain in front to see.

As you walk, see what else you and your kids can spot. Downtown Omaha has a complete art walk if youre interest. Read this post about the Omaha Art Walk.

Theres also the Urban Walking Labyrinth that begins at Urban Abbey.

    Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge

If you are in Omaha, visiting the great bob should be a top priority on your vacation to-do list! The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge is at a height of 3000 feet and lies across the Missouri river. As you walk across the bridge you leave Nebraska and head into Iowa, which clearly leads to lots of fun photos and antics.

While the walking part gives you a great view and a memorable experience both ends of the bridge have interesting places like a museum at one end and a green park at the other. Visiting the bridge around sunset can really add magic to the trek. The lights are spectacular at night.

At the end of the day, whatever time you spend with your child is a moment to cherish. Activities and vacations have a lasting impact on children. Giving them fond memories is just one the many joys of a parenting journey.

See A World Of Animals At Henry Doorly Zoo

Top 10 Things to Do with Kids in Omaha

Making several lists that rank the top zoos in America, including Trekaroos list of the best zoos visiting the Henry Doorly Zoo, is definitely one of the best things to do in Omaha with kids.

Henry Doorly Zoo is a sprawling complex with walkways lined with evergreen and deciduous trees. Youll find animals in expansive habitats that mimic their natural environs.

It is hard to see all this amazing zoo has to offer in one day, so here are some of the highlights you wont want to miss.

    • The Desert Dome, the Lied Jungle Forest, and the Scott Aquarium. All three lie close to the zoo entrance and are well worth the time. The desert dome is the worlds largest indoor desert . Below it is the Kingdom of the Night, in which the day-night cycles are reversed so visitors can see the nocturnal animals in their active time. The Lied Jungle has an elevated trail which will put you at eye level with macaws and spider monkeys. The aquarium is simply beautiful.
    • Multiple play areas. Particularly of note: the Red Barn petting zoo and the African Grasslands, where kids can play on a retired helicopter and a couple of safari trucks.
    • A huge aviary with mature trees inside. A boardwalk winds through it, with benches to rest and take in the beauty.
    • The Alaskan Adventure Spray Park. This spectacular sculpture park lets kids play among sea lions and whales while splashing in the water. Let them come to the zoo in swim gear, because after this theyll be completely soaked.
