The Children’s Museum of Memphis is the ultimate in hands-on fun, no matter how old your children are. Here, little ones are invited to explore and interact with a variety of exhibits including art stations, real emergency vehicles, a skyscraper to climb in, a kid-sized grocery store and bank, a real-life cockpit, kitchen area, tornado experience, and a toddler area specifically designed for kids four and under, among other interesting displays. There’s also an outdoor splash park in the summertime.

In 2017, the Children’s Museum restored its 1909 Dentzel Memphis Grand Carousel, a beautiful, glass-enclosed historic carousel that the whole family can ride and enjoy, though it does require an additional $3 ticket.

Discover The Memphis Zoo

Family Fun in Memphis

The Memphis Zoo is what first drew us to the area for our Memphis family vacation this summer. With exhibits including giant pandas, polar bears, and lions, the zoo was definitely the highlight of the trip for my kids. The scale of the zoo is apparent when you walk up and see the giant, Egyptian-style entrance gates, complete with an obelisk. Highlights of our visit included a sea lion show and camel rides for the kids. We especially loved the Animals of the Night building, which reverses nighttime and daytime light patterns so visitors can see nocturnal animals when they are active.

The Memphis Zoo is huge, so plan on it being an all-day experience. With several restaurants filled with good food, a small playground, and a splash pad, there are plenty of areas for young families to take breaks. If youre a member of your local AZA-accredited zoo, show your membership card for a discount on admission.

Grown-ups know that Memphis is full of fun but kids will find it equally full of attractions that entertain.

While many of Memphis’s attractions – Graceland, the National Civil Rights Museum and others – are appealing for children, kids will discover that the city is full of attractions seemingly created just for them.

The Memphis Zoo is our absolute favorite spot to take the kids. With exhibits that let young ones get close up and personal with the animals and everything from grizzly bears to panda bears and wolves, the zoo is a treat for the entire family. The Bass Pro Shop at the Pyramid is an ultimate family destination that combines the outdoor and sporting goods retailer with a bowling alley, cypress swamp , gun and archery ranges, an aquarium and more.

Kids of all ages can learn all about the history of the city – and the Mighty Mississippi – at the Mud Island River Park /Mississippi River Museum, ride around downtown on the historic trolley, explore the Wolf River via bicycle on the Greenline and visit Buffalo or go horseback riding at Shelby Farms. No trip to Memphis is complete without a visit to the historic Peabody Hotel, where the resident ducks march to and from their rooftop palace every morning and afternoon. And there’s no better place in town than the old-fashioned five-and-dime called A. Schwab’s – right on Beale Street, and full of souvenirs from a trip the Bluff City.

See The Famous Peabody Ducks At Peabody Hotel

This was an interesting attraction in Memphis for kids.

When it was suggested we head to the Peabody Hotel to watch a parade of ducks in the hotel lobby, I didnt know what to expect.

Turns out, the Duck March is one of the top Memphis attractions. People were lined up along the red carpet, yes there is a red carpet leading from the fountain to the elevator, the whole lobby was packed and people were standing two deep around the railing of the second level.

People were lined up along the red carpet , the whole lobby was packed and people were standing two deep around the railing of the second level.

The Legend of the Peabody Memphis Ducks started back in the 1930s, and they still visit the lobby fountain at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day.

They hop out of the fountain, walk the red carpet, step into the elevator and ride to the rooftop. Amazing!

The whole procession only takes 20 seconds, but the duck master talks for about 20 minutes beforehand, somewhat interesting and somewhat dragging on.

The famous Peabody Marching Ducks have appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, The Oprah Winfrey Show and in People magazine and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.

Dont go too far out of your way to see this, but if youre in downtown and looking for free things to do in Memphis TN, check it out.

Where To Eat In Memphis With Kids

FREE & BUDGET FRIENDLY THINGS TO DO | Memphis, TN

Breakfast. Im still thinking about our blowout breakfast at the Blue Plate Café . From the moment biscuits arrived hot from the oven, we knew it was worth the wait. Fluffy pancakes, cheesy grits, smoked bacon yum.

Brunch. For brunch, we drove to The Kitchen, a restaurant and terrace inside the city park, the huge Shelby Farms Park. What improves Eggs Benedict? Pork carnitas, caramelized onions and delicious biscuits with a touch of salt. And my husband loved his eggs and Moroccan spiced lamb sausage and greens. The sourdough bread and blackberry jam were delicious. And The Kitchens sticky toffee pudding put us into a happy food coma. A less pricey option in the Park is the grab-n-go at the Visitors Center, called The Kitchenette.

Lunch and Dinner. Trust me, my life is better because I didnt hold back at Central Barbecue. Instead, for lunch, I ordered both the impossibly tender dry rub ribs and the banana pudding with crispy pecan cookies. Central Barbecues Downtown location is a block from the National Civil Rights Museum and a good place to relax afterward.

TravelingMom tip: The line was out the door of Central Barbecue but moved fast. Still, I was glad we scheduled a late lunch at 2 pm.

    See The Peabody Ducks

For 90 years the Peabody Ducks have been visiting the fountain in the lobby of the Peabody Hotel at 11am and 5pm each day. The famous duck march is one of the top attractions in Memphis. We were honored to have a front row table reserved for us to watch the march in person. Payton was also able to assist with the preparation of the famous show. After the show we toured the duck mansion on top of the hotel and visited the famous ballrooms located on the top floor.

Watch The Duck Parade At The Peabody Hotel

The Peabody Ducks are perhaps the most famous residents of Memphis. These ducks live in The Peabody Hotel and march through the lobby twice a day to the tune of John Philip Sousas King Cotton march.

Its quite a sight to see, and its a tradition that dates back to the 1930s when hotel owner Frank Schutt brought live ducks to the hotel to serve as a hunting decoy.

Now, the ducks have their own penthouse suite and are taken care of by the hotels Duckmaster. If you want to learn more about these feathered friends, you can take a behind-the-scenes tour of their home or attend one of the daily duck feedings.

Kid Friendly Things To Do In Nashville Tennessee

5 Family Fun Spots in Memphis, Tennessee

This is post is sponsored by Maxi Cosi. Thanks for helping me support the brands I love.

A couple weeks ago Leighton, my sister her husband and I took a fun little weekend getaway to Nashville. We love Nashville! Its only 3 hours away, and there is always so much to do there. The last 2 times we came it was winter, so we were excited to be back in the summertime to see what all Nashville had to offer in the summer. I have been there countless times before Leighton was around, so today I thought I would share some of my favorite kid friendly things to do in Nashville this time.

    1. Summerfest at Gaylord Opryland. The theme for Summerfest this year is Alice in Wonderland. Leighton hasnt seen the movie yet, but she LOVED every minute of all the attractions throughout the hotel!

    2. A waterpark or pool. We visited Nashville Shores all day on Saturday and had such a great time. There is a lazy river, ziplining, a lake, a wave pool and a great variety of adult waterslides and even ones for the kids! Ive been going for a decade so I figured it was finally time to go with Leighton this time. = )

    3. Nashville Zoo. Even though Memphis has a great zoo right here, I cant resist visiting other zoos to see what theyre like when were out of town.

    4. Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. There is so much to do here that you will love and the kids will too!

    5. Adventure Science Center. They have so many cool exhibits and an imagination playground made out of foam!
