Why You Should Go
Who says you cant enjoy a beach escape in this desert-heavy state?
Sure, its over a hundred miles away from the ocean, but the city has lake beaches with powdery sands and refreshing water.
And, unlike the ocean, the citys freshwater lake has no sharks and riptide currents.
With its picture-perfect green-blue waters, these beaches are also filled with dazzling sights to see this weekend.

Best Place To Stay In Lake Havasu
*Disclaimer: We received a complimentary stay in exchange for our honest review. All opinions are our own.
We loved staying at the Nautical Beachfront Resort! Im pretty sure when George Strait sang about oceanfront property in Arizona this is what he was talking about.
Lake Havasu City is known as Arizonas West Coast. This hotel is the only beachfront resort in all of Arizona and the closest thing youll find to staying on the ocean in the desert!
Our favorite feature is having a sandy beach and cove to moor your boat in just steps away from your room.
My boys were in heaven having their own private beach just outside our room!
The Nautical Resort is Lake Havasus first hotel and has been around since the 1960s.
It has undergone renovations and is continually being updated, the newest section is where the Beach Suites are located.
We found the rooms to be clean and the service was great. There are a variety of rooms and suites available, each one with a patio or balcony overlooking the water.
If you want to park your boat in the cove, spots must be reserved in advance and there is an additional charge.
However, slips are available at the dock on a first come first serve basis and are included with the resort fee.
The main beach also allows guests to moor their boats overnight as part of the resort fee on a first come first serve basis.
Another favorite feature of the resort is the oversized infinity pool.
Between the pool and the beach, my boys lived in the water!
Splash And Swim With The Kids
The gentle waters of Lake Havasu make splashing and swimming delightful for the whole family. Water wings, inner tubes, air mattresses, beach balls, and pool noodles amplify the fun, and the soothing waters seem to melt away stress for everyone. If you rent some paddleboards at one of the local watersports stores, you can have fun teaching the kids how to paddle and ensure lots of giggles every time you wipe out.

Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge
60911 AZ-95, Parker, AZ 85344, map
On the south side of the lake is Bill Williams National Wildlife Refuge. Its popular for birding , kayaking, and fishing. There are a couple of trails short trails for wildlife watching and an auto tour loop that you need a high-clearance 4×4 for.
We made a quick stop and didnt see many birds, but heres a list of all the birds you might see and which season.
The Audubon Christmas Bird Count here is the oldest bird-watching event in North America.
Local Tip:On the south side of the road, look for a brown sign with binoculars. Drive-up the rough dirt road to an overlook where you can see fall colors. Leslie, Havasu Rocks Volunteer

Tour The Lake Havasu Museum Of History
The Lake Havasu Museum of History shares the amazing lives of the Native Americans, the pioneers, settlers, miners, and ranchers who shaped the story of the area. Antique tools, ore samples, and historical documents depict the role mining has had in building dreams about finding gold, copper, and semi-precious stones. Other exhibits cover Native American life, culture, and customs. The history of Lake Havasu City comes to life in the story of the visionaries who planned, invested, and built it.
Mountain Biking In Sara Park

SARA Park in Lake Havasu City has lots of cool hiking trails, along with rodeo grounds, a BMX track, a shooting range, and a dog park. It pretty much takes care of all of your off-the-water recreational needs, and according to my son, the mountain biking trails are fabulous!
We rented a mountain bike and helmet from Cycle Therapy right in downtown Lake Havasu City. The prices were decent and the staff was extremely knowledgeable about the area, giving us lots of advice and recommending that we download the Trailforks app for easier navigation.
The mountain bike trails in SARA park are well marked, but many are quite challenging. Be prepared to get hot and sweaty!
We also heard a rumor of an area within the park that had been designed and built up by a local man with all kinds of features and jumps, We never found it, but were going to try again next time.

Give Rockhounding A Try
If you have a budding geologist in the family, this area is ripe for rockhounding. Its a great way to collect souvenirs as well as gems, minerals, and fossils while getting exercise and enjoying the breathtaking scenery. The Lake Havasu Gem & Mineral Society offers regular field trips, which help beginners learn where and how to hunt. Some rockhounds use their finds to decorate their homes, but smaller finds can be tumbled and smoothed out for jewelry. Some of the possible finds in this area include agates, quartz, geodes, copper, and gold.

Having out-of-state BFF has its pros and cons. The cons are pretty obvious you cant see each other nearly as much as youd like and sometimes youre out of the loop. The greatest pro though, is that it creates a reason to travel and with my BFF just one state away in Arizona, travel we do!
In the 8 or 9 years Erin and I have been friends, we have traveled back and forth between California and Arizona quite a bit. Even as our lives grow fuller and busier, we still manage to see each other a couple of times a year. We will be together again in just a few weeks Ill be sure to share that awesome trip on the blog in August! One favorite spot to meet up is Lake Havasu, AZ and I have so many wonderful memories from there. In fact, it was the destination of our first vacation together.
Warning: #throwback photos coming! I cant believe how little my baby girl was then!
With our BFF family driving up from Tucson and us driving out from Palm Springs, Lake Havasu is the perfect getaway for us, less desert, more lake! Generally when we meet up in the summer, we are always out on the boat, but there are other things to do in Lake Havasu!

When Is The Best Time To Visit Lake Havasu City

Most people will tell you that the best time to visit Lake Havasu City is during Spring Break when the weather is mild, the crowds are big, and the drinks are flowing, but Ive never been a fan of crowds, so Spring Break was never on my radar. If you are looking for a party scene, then Lake Havasu during Spring Break may be exactly what youve been looking for.
I have visited Lake Havasu in January, April, June, and October, and loved each of my visits for different reasons. June in Lake Havasu is phenomenally hot, but also the offseason, so hotel rooms and vacation rentals are cheaper.
The best way to handle June in Lake Havasu is to get out early like 4 am early, and then relax indoors with a good book during the heat of the day. Evenings are still hot, but cool enough to swim in the lake, dine on a waterfront patio, and stroll through town.
