Kid Friendly Things To Do In Colorado Springs

Go Sandboarding At Great Sand Dunes National Park

Colorado Springs Things To Do With Kids: Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Penrose Museum, Ghost Town Museum.

Colorado is famous for its skiing and snowboarding culture. Epic destinations like Vail and Aspen are often on the list of the coolest things to do in Colorado with kids. If you love tearing down hills on sleds and snowboards, youll get a thrill out of sandboarding at Great Sand Dunes National Park. Great Sand Dunes is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America. These monster dunes can top 750 ft in height. This makes them one of the greatest natural play areas in Colorado for families.

We first tried sandboarding in Ica Peru, and since then our boys have been begging to do it again. A visit to Great Sand Dunes National Park gave us a great chance to hit the hills and get some sand in our faces. Sandboard rentals arent available in the park itself, but they are available at the Oasis Store just a short drive from the entrance to the park. If you end up going to the Great Sand Dunes to experience sandboarding in Colorado with kids, make sure to pack a pair of goggles and something to cover your face. Because unlike snow, sand doesnt melt! You can check out our complete guide to visiting Great Sand Dunes National Park here.

Take An Old Fashioned Candy Tour At Hammonds Candies

Im going to be completely honest here and say that this Colorado experience was more about me than it was for my kids. They dont even like candy that much. But I do! And a visit to Hammonds Candy Factory in Denver gave my sweet tooth the hit it was looking for. Hammonds Candies crafts old-fashioned candies. These are those types of massive lollipops, marshmallows, and swirlies that you would expect to see pumped out at Willy Wonkas. But instead of Oompa Loompas, a tour of Hammonds shows you up to 150 expert candy makers crafting the most beautiful treats youve ever seen.

Not only is a tour of the Hammonds Candy Factory one of the most delicious things to do in Colorado with kids, but its also free! Youll learn about how the company got started, and just how big of a business candy can be. Kids will be awe-inspired watching workers hand pull massive slaps of sweet deliciousness and transforming them into beautiful treats right before their eyes. And no visit to a candy factory would be complete without a couple of free samples! You can find out all the tour details on Hammonds here.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Colorado

It really depends on what activities you are interested in doing on your trip. Feed Giraffes At The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo In Colorado Springs

20 FREE, fun and family

What has four legs, a blue tongue the length of a small child and has to be standing 10 feet below you to look you squarely in the eye? No, its not a giant lizard, its a giraffe and theyre just one of the many highlights we found while walking around the beautiful Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

The coolest part about having these gentle giants at eye level is you can feed them lettuce right from your hands. Its still a little unnerving to see those huge giraffe tongues come out but the look of happiness they have as they grab their lunch from you is undeniable. Who knew lettuce could taste so good?

As well as hand feeding giraffes from the largest giraffe herd in the Americas, at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo you can take a chairlift called the Sky Ride that will have you soaring above it all. Not only do you get some amusing birds eye views of the many animals below but you get some amazing views over Cheyenne Mountain and a good portion of the valley around Colorado Springs.

Love animals? The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has over 750 animals and 170 species from all over the the world. We thought we walked just about everywhere while we there but, as we left, we realized we still hadnt seen everything.

From lions, tigers and snow leopards in the African and Asian exhibits to learning about and interacting with chickens and goats in My Big Backyard, there are tons of things for kids of all ages.

The Colorado Wolf And Wildlife Center

  • 4729 Twin Rocks Rd, Divide, CO 80814, USA
  • Phone: +1 719-687-9742
  • Suggested amount of time to visit: 1.5 to 2 hours

The Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center is actually in Divide, Colorado and took us about 40 minutes to drive from Colorado Springs. Of course, the day we chose it was snowing! Dont let the distance deter you from visiting. For my animal-loving son, this was one of his two favorite family activities in Colorado Springs, or rather, on our Colorado Springs trip.

The center serves as a sanctuary for wolves, coyotes, and foxes. We did the basic tour and were fascinated the entire time, in spite of the freezing weather! The tour started out with an informational talk on the different kinds of wolves and their history in the area and in the United States. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and obviously enjoyed what she was doing.

Ever since I was a little kid Ive had a fascination with wolves and had posters of wolves all over my walls. My son loves to learn about all living creatures. He even took a bottle of wolf fur and photos to share all about it with his second-grade class when he got home.
