Stare At A Masterpiece At The Cleveland Museum Of Art

Its hard to believe that a museum of this caliber is FREE! The Cleveland Museum of Art is home to 30,000 works of art and there is sure to be something to entertain families of all ages.

Weve been to the CMA three times with our young family. While their favorites so far were the Armor Court, and the escalator , it has been a positive for us to expose our children to art at a young age! Maybe the biggest question came from our son who wondered why there were so many naked people! If nothing else, its a great way to spend a cold day in Cleveland and sitting inside the museums atrium it feels like youre outside in the sun.

The Museum is closed on Mondays. Large backpacks are not permitted and must be checked. There is a nursing room available.

The Great Lakes Science Center

A one-minute walk from the Rock Hall of Fame, the Great Lakes Science Center was my sons absolute highlight. We spent over three hours there, most of it doing interactive activities that showcase the science behind light, sound, motion, force, the watershed and everything else you can imagine. The NASA Glenn Visitor Center space-related displays are impressive as well. When we return to explore even more things to do in Cleveland, this will be our first stop.

Admire The Best Holiday Light Displays

We have a whole post all about the best Christmas lights, but here are some great places to take kids to see holiday lights around Cleveland:

  • Public Square: Public Square always has incredible light displays during the holiday season. There is a giant tree, ice rink, and thousands upon thousands of lights dangling overhead after Thanksgiving. There are even light tunnels and a light show on Terminal Tower that occurs three times per hour from 4-10 pm every night through early January. You can also check out the decorations and big Christmas tree inside Tower City while youre there.
  • The Arcade:The Arcade is a Cleveland holiday staple to enjoy with its giant Christmas tree, twinkling garland, and overall timeless holiday feels. Enjoy a free display of lights and decorations here.

Walk Among The Wallabies At Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

Great Lakes Science Center – 5 things to see (Kid-friendly attraction)

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo | Photo by Melissa Moore

Each city in Ohio seems to have its own zoo and Cleveland is no exception. At the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo visitors can see four different types of bears: black bears, grizzly bears, sloth bears, and Andean bears. Maybe youll be as lucky as we were and get to see the grizzlies wrestling together in the water!

Another highlight at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is the Australian Adventure exhibit. Families can walk among the wallabies and kangaroos. Keep your eyes open and you might spot a joey in its moms pouch! Kids love the nearby Yaga Tree, a tree house playground where they can climb across rope bridges and slide down a long twisty slide. Watch out for the crocodile who lives in the tree house!

Catch A Gorgeous Sunset At The Flats

The Flats lie outside the immediate downtown area of Cleveland, so you will need to take transportation there. I recommend going for dinner and staying for the sunset along the Riverfront boardwalk.

For a family friendly dinner at the Flats, we recommend Lindeys Lake House because the outdoor area has games like chess and cornhole to keep kids entertained. While we were walking around, we also saw Backyard Bocce Restaurant with actual bocce courts inside, great views of the Riverfront, and tables for people watching. My kids were begging to go inside, but it was getting late.

If you would like to get a birds-eye view of the sunset, get a prime lounge chair on the Landshark Rooftop Bar attached to ! Be warned, once the sun sets, the party scene at The Flats starts revving up!
