The American Visionary Art Museum earns its title with galleries and pieces that astound and move.
The pieces housed here are ones you mightve previously only envisioned in dreams.
Curation and design make the AVAM one of the best museums.
When you visit, youll have your pick of scores of impressive galleries, from the outdoor A Very Visionary Star-Spangled Sidewalk to the thousands of pieces in the permanent collection.
While not all exhibitions are permanent, all of them are certainly worth browsing.
There are so many breathtaking things to see at the American Visionary Art Museum.
Its open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Check out a home game at Camden Yards and introduce the kids to this American pastime! My husband loved Camden Yards so much while he was in college that our first born son is named Camden. Experience an exciting Orioles game and bring your kids to the Orioles Kids Corner, where they can play on the interactive Bird House jungle gym, try the Moon Bounce, play skeeball, and enjoy kid-friendly baseball classic snacks like corn dogs, snowballs, and cotton candy! The crowd is great and it is a great environment to watch a game.

Ripleys Believe It Or Not
The museum full of oddities has plenty to do and see. There are over 350 artifacts and exhibits on display so theres something fun for everyone from the littlest ones to adults. Each room we explored had more creepy and fun exhibits. The ancient Egypt room might have just been my favorite. I totally wish I had my video camera recording as Ry went to open the treasure chest and the noise made everyone in the room jump!
There was even a station at the end where they can take a wax mold of your hand. My tween thought this was pretty cool and had fun doing this. His hand statute stands proudly on his bedroom dresser now.

1. From the moment you lay eyes on the glass mosaic exterior of the American Visionary Art Museum, it’s clear you’re in for a treat. This museum showcases a diverse array of works big and small from a wide variety of talents. You’re never sure what you’ll see from one gallery to the next. Kids will surely get a giggle out of the Fart Machine located near the bathrooms on the lower level and the kooky gift shop, aptly named Sideshow, offers plenty of unique trinkets to remember your visit, plus a working Zoltar machine.
2. Situated on a pair of piers in the heart of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, you’ll find The National Aquarium, home to more than 20,000 animals, spread out over 250,000 square feet of exhibition space. The highlight is the Dolphin Discovery exhibition, with a thriving colony of dolphins ready to educate and entertain.
3. Another beautiful Inner Harbor institution, The Maryland Science Center, is one of the oldest science museums in the nation. It has exhibits dedicated to everything from dinosaurs to Newtown’s Laws, electricity, the human body, outer space, and beyond.
4. The nearby Port Discovery Children’s Museum houses three floors of hands-on fun catering to children ages 10 and younger. There are more than 20 different exhibits to explore from the toddler-friendly Chessie’s Playground to the four-stories tall Skyclimber.

Not only is it nice to get a change of metro area scenery sometimes, our sister city just a 45-minute drive away is full of fantastic, family-friendly attractions to visit on a day trip or even a weekend getaway. Even more, its fun to explore the neighborhoods, spend time by the water, and savor tasty eats . So, after way too long, heres a round-up of all of the Baltimore places covered on KFDC in one big post, plus a few extras recommended by friends, and even more tips for a great visit there with kids. Industry and immigration shaped early 19th century Baltimore into one of the nations largest cities. Baltimore became a key location for people and goods traveling to the Midwest on the National Road. Later, when the opening of the Erie Canal threatened Baltimores businesses, the B & O Railroad was formed to continue trade.
Any little train-lover will want to spend hours exploring the roundhouse at the B & O Railroad Museum. Kids can dress up and play with one of many train tables inside the beautifully maintained roundhouse building. History buffs are sure to enjoy reading about the role that the B & O Railroad played in the Civil War.
At the Baltimore Museum of Industry, families can learn about Baltimores oyster canning industry firsthand at the actual location of the 1865 Platt and Company oyster cannery. They can also step into an early 20th Century pharmacy and soda fountain. Looking east from the museum out onto the harbor, the dominating Under Armour complex and Domino Sugar sign leave no doubt that Baltimore is still home to some world famous businesses. Some days visitors can even smell the sugar from the Domino Sugar Plant wafting through the air.

For the last few days weve been busy exploring Baltimores Inner Harbor. The last time I was here was for a school trip in middle school, so yeah its been little while. With so much to do all in a relatively close space, I thought it was the perfect place to get away with the kids for a few days. I knew there would be plenty to do and plenty to keep them busy, what I didnt know was just how much fun they would have. There really is a lot to do at the Inner Harbor. So much we didnt even get to touch half of it but that just means well be back soon for more fun. If youre looking for fun attractions everyone in the family will enjoy no matter their age then here are my five family fun things to do in Baltimores Inner Harbor.

Take A Tour Of The Baltimores Diverse Neighborhoods

Baltimore is a city of neighborhoods. It was once the second leading port of entry for European immigrants. Now the neighborhoods arent as distinct as they once were, but the citys best pasta is still served up in Little Italy. A good way for families with older children to get a feel for the history of some of the neighborhoods is to take a food tour with Charm City Food Tours. A trolley ride with Baltimore Trolley Tour is another great way to visit different parts of the city.
Families wanting to tour on their own can take a short, uphill walk from the Inner Harbor through Downtown to Mount Vernon. In Mount Vernon, they can see Baltimores Washington Monument, the Peabody Library, and the Walters Art Museum. Another worthwhile walk is from the Inner Harbor to Edgar Allan Poes Gravesite at Westminster Hall.
College Park Aviation Museum
The College Park Aviation Museum preserves and promotes innovations in aviation in Prince Georges County and at College Park Airport, while also fostering lifelong curiosity, inventiveness, and research about the science and history of flight. The museum first opened its doors to the public in 1998 and is a Smithsonian Institution affiliate. Inside the College Park Aviation Museum is a 1.5-story open exhibit space, highlighting a display of artifacts and unique aircraft and telling the story of the many firsts of the College Park Airport. The gallery is home to reproduction aircraft and historic aircraft that are associated with the airfields history.

Go Aboard A Historic Ship In The Inner Harbor

It seems appropriate that Baltimore, an important shipbuilding and supply-shipping center as recently as World War II, is home to four historic military vessels. These ships span US history from the Civil War through the battle of Pearl Harbor and finally to the Vietnam War. Now families can board these ships in Baltimores Inner Harbor and learn their history.
Most notably, kids ages six and up can participate in the USS Constellations Powder Monkey Tour. The tour teaches children how the ship sailed the Atlantic in the 1860s on a mission to stop slave traders in route to America as part of the Africa Squadron.
