Hang Out On The Atlanta Beltline

The Atlanta Beltline is a former railway corridor around the core of Atlanta that is now a multi-use trail. According to Beltine.org, The Atlanta Beltine is the most comprehensive transportation and economic development effort ever undertaken in the City of Atlanta and among the largest, most wide-ranging urban redevelopment programs currently underway in the United States. And there are TONS of activities for locals and visitors alike here that are free.

Check out the online calendar for free fitness classes, hiking and biking tours, kids activities and more. It is also one of my favorite spots for people watching! The cafes, wine bars and restaurants that have sprung up along side the Beltline make this a place where you could spend the whole day. There are also playgrounds, spray grounds, and even a skate park which are all well-maintained and free! When looking for activities that are free in Atlanta, the Beltine probably has something youd enjoy.

Learn Of Past Struggles At The National Center For Civil And Human Rights

Led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Georgian capital played a pivotal role in the American Civil War. Its and his involvement is chronicled here to a tee.

Dr Martin Luther King Jr National Historic Park

If you are visiting Atlanta, you must take advantage of the many opportunities to learn more about Dr. King. And, one of the best places to do that is at the national park named in his honor. The 35-acre site is actually home to several indoor and outdoor spaces to visit. Formerly a National Historic Site, in 2018, it was given a National Historical Park designation.

One of my familys favorite places to visit within the boundaries of this national historic park is the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church. It is filled with reverence and some of the most important history of the Civil Rights Movement. This is where Dr. Kings father was a pastor and where Dr. King himself was a pastor. Dr. King was baptized here and 39 years later, the church hosted his funeral.

We like to sit on the richly-restored pews and listen to Dr. Kings live sermons as they are broadcast through an impressive sound system. Let the kids experience what it might have felt like to sit in this church in the 1960s. It is one of the things to do in Atlanta with kids that is completely awe-inspiring.

TravelingMom Tip: The MLK Park is located downtown and includes The King Center, Ebenezer Baptist Church, the meticulously restored birth home of Martin Luther King Jr., gardens and monuments, as well as a fun playground and recreation areas. Take the downtown trolley over for an easy ride from downtown hotels. Note that the buildings are currently closed due to Covid-19.
