The 15+ Best Indoor Activities In Nyc

5.12.19

Bad weather sucks, but that doesnt mean your trip to New York has to! Here are the best indoor activities in NYC, according to a local.

Waking up to blah weather your first day in a new city is the worst feeling. You spent so much time crafting the perfect itinerary and planned to see the city by foot, just like the locals do. But now it looks like itll start raining at any minute, and it turns out you planned for everything but the possibility of bad weather. Been there, done that!

I used to get so upset whenever the weather turned sour on vacation. Id feel like we had lost a day to bad weather, and Id get bent out of shape about our trip not being as perfect as I wanted it to be. I wont lie and say Ive learned to fully embrace unexpected bouts of rain on vacation, but after almost five years of solo travel I have learned to love cozying up indoors and taking things a bit slower.

If Im traveling during the spring or fall, instead of planning a strict itinerary Ill list a lot of activities Im interested in doing and group them together based on how close they are to each other and whether theyre indoors or outdoors. That way, when I wake up to pouring rain outside my window, I have a few backup plans for things to do when the weather is less than ideal.

Try Gun Shooting In Westside Rifle & Pistol Range

I bet this will excite you in no time. Though New York City is a highly restrictive state for purchasing, possessing, or carrying firearms, there are places, such as Westside Rifle & Pistol Range, where you can legally try this cool activity.

You will fill in a risk acceptance form and watch a safety video before heading to the encounter and pick up your ear and eye protection gears, guns, and bullets, which is about $70 per two dozens.

When you are ready, step in the range. It might be a bit terrifying for any first-timers to hear the shooting sound. Just relax and follow the instructors directions and keep the gun locked when not in use. I am sure you will loose up in a bit and picture yourself as the next James Bond.

My first time trying gun shooting in Westside Rifle & Pistol Range.

Whether you have a sweet tooth or not, it wouldnt hurt to get yourself a sweet treat to light up your day. Below are a few NYC dessert shops that we love and frequently come back to.

Bowl It Up At Bowlmor

NYC first in nation to require proof of vaccination for some indoor activities

Looking for fun things to do in NYC in the rain? If so then bowling is always a solid choice since it takes you out of the elements and is a classic activity that can be enjoyed by adults and kids alike.

And while there are tons of different bowling alleys throughout NYC, one of my all-time faves will forever and always be Bowlmor.

Yeah, they basically completely changed the entire bowling game when they first opened their franchise and now have locations scattered all across NYC.

Although truth be told, their Times Square location is probably the most centrally located outpost for anyone visiting NYC from out of town.

But, wait, why Bowlmor specifically?

Well, its basically part entertainment center and part bowling alley. Plus, they have a grand total of six different alleys that are spread throughout two floors lanes that each have their own individual decor theme, including Central Park, Chinatown, Coney Island, Times Square, etc.

Now, is it a little bit over the top and ridiculous? You betcha! But who cares? Thats all part of the appeal and thats something that any potential children you have will totally ADORE.

And if you and your fam arent super into bowling, then you can always make use of their two different bars , arcade, billiards tables, and lane-side snack areas that serve iconic treats like nachos, French fries, chicken wings – easily making this one of the best bowling alleys in Manhattan.

Visit The Morgan Public Library And Museum

Just a hoot and holler down the road from the New York Public Library is this badass of the NYC museum world.

And if Im being brutally honest here, I actually think that its infinitely BETTER than its literary cousin.

Thats because not only does The Morgan Public Library look like a real-life version of the library from Beauty and the Beast but its a whole lot less well known.

As a result, its still not totally inundated with selfie-sticking wielding tourists. A next-level beautiful fact that allows you to semi-quietly take in the awe-inspiring majesty of an original Guttenberg Bible and an authentic Mozart composition.

Just sprinkle in some enchanting, old-world architecture, amazing temporary exhibits, and a historically accurate recreation of Mr. Morgans personal study , and you have one of the best indoor activities in NYC.

And while tickets can seem a bit steep at $20 a person, you can always save some hard-earned money by visiting on Friday evenings, when admission is free between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm.

Plus, youll get to see a free, live jazz performance too! So, seriously, whats not to love?

Pro Tip: After your visit, be sure to check out Grand Central Terminal, the New York Public Library, and Bryant Park since they are all right here. And if youre hungry, you can also grab some delicious green tea crepe cake from Lady M Cake Boutique near Bryant Park.
