This Williamsburg church was the first in the state to have a cruciform shape.

Day Trip From Colonial Williamsburg To Hampton Roads
Part of the challenge of planning a family vacation to the Colonial Williamsburg area is that there are so many things to do in Williamsburg with kids! If youre looking for a change of pace, nearby Norfolk and Hampton are packed with family-friendly attractions.
The entire Hampton Roads region is known for its naval and maritime history. Norfolk is home to regions the star attraction, the USS Wisconsin.
The Battleship Wisconsin is open for the public to explore as part of the ticket to the neighboring Nauticus Museum. My own kids were quite entertained checking out everything to the ship from the radio control room to the living quarters.
For a total escape from history, check out the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. There is a huge childrens garden complete with three separate water features.
My kids enjoyed the expertly manicured formal gardens with lion statues and perennial flowers. We could have easily spent the entire day strolling the paths and stopping to smell the roses.

Step back in time as you visit the elegant home of John D. Rockefeller Jr. and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller. It is an 18th-century two-story house that was built and furnished in the 1930s and 40s. Each room here shows why Basset Hall is the favored retreat of the Rockefellers. The house contains exquisite folk art, antiques from the 18th century, and 20th-century decor, showing the lavishness of the family. Apart from the main house, Basset Hall also has a picturesque view from the outside, with its manicured lawns and 5,000 trees and shrubs that make you believe youre in the 1940s era.

There are plenty of family-friendly accommodations in Williamsburg like Great Wolf Lodge. But you can also stay in style at the Autograph Collection properties, including one where Queen Elizabeth herself stayed. The Williamsburg Inn was built in 1937 and has luxury themed suites and the famous Rockefeller Room.

Dine In Colonial Taverns
In colonial Virginia, taverns were where local people and travelers gathered for news, food, and sociability. Some of those in Williamsburg are still active dining places where you can get a feel for 18th-century social life and taste authentic dishes that Jefferson or Washington might have enjoyed here.
Raleigh Tavern was a social hot spot favored by members of the House of Burgesses, and equally popular was Wetherburn’s Tavern, right across the street. Balls and banquets were held at both taverns, and during restoration, nearly 200,000 artifacts were found on the site of Wetherburn’s.
King’s Arms Tavern opened in 1722 and catered to the gentry with the finest furnishings and service. Today, it continues that standard as the premier dining room in the historic area, with 18th-century musical entertainment.
Much more informal is Chowning’s Tavern, which first opened in 1766 catering to a less lofty clientele. Today, the restaurant retains this spirit, serving traditional English fare, and featuring evening Gambols, with colonial games and music. George Washington’s favorite was Christiana Campbell’s Tavern, and you can still enjoy Christiana’s special seafood dish here as he did. Shields Tavern serves a varied home-style menu in a casual atmosphere.
