While the fall is a great time to jog or take long walks with your dog on Long Island, be aware that some places in Nassau and Suffolk Counties won’t allow your canine friend to come along.

Thankfully, designated dog runs on Long Island welcome your furry friend with open arms. Some are fenced off-leash parks while others are dog-friendly trails where you just need to keep your dog with you on a leash.

Surprisingly, many beautiful parks welcome on-leash dogs, including Bailey Arboretum, which houses 42 acres of gardens. Sagamore Hill National Historic Site also allows leashed dogs on the 83-acre property surrounding the home of former U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt, who was a dog lover.

Go Hiking As A Family This Fall

Fall Activities For Toddlers

Fall is the perfect time to get out and enjoy the great outdoors with your kids. Hiking is a good way to stay active, get exercise, and explore nature while keeping your distance from others.

Be sure to plan at least some of your Fall hikes for late October, when most leaves have fallen. Its the perfect time to take your kids hiking through the woods because theyll be able to see a lot more.

Here are some other important things to remember while youre hiking with kids:

  • Keep it short. Remember, the farther you walk, the longer the walk back will be. With young children, plan hikes that are two miles or less in length. On these hikes, its more about exploring nature together than reaching the pinnacle or end of the trail.
  • Wear layers. It may be cool when you begin your hike, but it could be very warm by the end of the day. Be sure you have layers you can add or take away as needed. Kids that arent comfortable are grumpy. Grumpy kids can quickly ruin a family hiking experience.
  • Bring water and snacks. No matter how big your meal was before beginning your hike, youre going to want to bring snacks on the trail if youre hiking with young children. The only thing more grumpy than a hot or cold kid is a hungry kid. Apples, granola bars, and trail mix make great hiking snacks for Fall adventures.
