Hang Out 60 Feet Above The Ground At Tree

Part of the deceptively named Tallahassee Museum, this complex is far from a stale, dusty, old museum. In fact, its the exact opposite.

Set amidst 52 acres of gorgeous Florida cypress swamps is a high ropes and zip line adventure with 3 different courses to choose from. My 5-year-old did the easiest one. After a thorough safety briefing, my 7-year-old joined Josh and I on the Canopy Crossing . The tougher Soaring Cypress looked awesome, but we just ran out of time.

The elevated obstacles tested my strength, balance and coordination, but I triumphed.

A wooden playground on-site will keep little tots amused if theyre too young for the ropes course.

Wakulla Springs State Park

For an up-close look at nature in Northern Florida, take the family to Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park just a short drive south of Tallahassee. The park is a 6,000 acre wildlife sanctuary and home to the 120 foot deep Wakulla Springs which is one of the largest and deepest freshwater springs in the world.

There is a swimming area and a 22 foot diving platform which are popular during the summer months as the water stays around 69 degrees Fahrenheit year round. It doesnt seem to bother anyone that they are swimming in the same waters as the nearby gators although it would definitely give me pause.

The most popular of the many activities available in the park is the River Boat Tour along the Wakulla River which lasts a little less than an hour and is narrated by a park ranger. Visitors are taken on an incredible 2 mile loop down the river where they will have an opportunity to see birds, turtles and alligators up close in their natural habitat as the boat glides among the cypress trees. We were fortunate to also see manatees on our cruise and I was beside myself with excitement!

Kids might be interested to learn that Wakulla Springs was a filming location for Tarzan and The Creature of the Black Lagoon. Kayaking on the Wakulla River is also a popular activity but Im not sure that I would be brave enough to kayak in waters that are home to alligators either.

Take A Jungle Cruise At Wakulla Springs

Top 15 Things To Do In Tallahassee, Florida

Wakulla Springs is the perfect place to see wild manatees. These gentle creatures swim upstream to play in the warm waters of one of the worlds largest fresh water springs. An astonishing 2000-4000 gallons of water flow out of the spring every second at a constant temperature of 69°F . A diving tower jutting out into the spring provides a birds eye view of the good-natured manatees as they congregate in the deeper waters even the babies.

Manatees look like grey, tusk-less walruses, but are much cuter. We stared in amazement for a while as the youngest member of the herd curiously nuzzled the colorful buoys and cuddled his mummy. As mammals, they rise to the surface every 3 to 5 minutes to breathe, so you can get a better look with a little patience.

If you want to get even closer to nature, you can catch the relaxing . It leaves approximately every hour from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. and travels down the river with a guide pointing out manatees, turtles, black vultures, egresses and plenty of alligators. Its an inexpensive activity and youre sure to get your fill of gators. It kind of freaked me out since it was the very same river we kayaked on earlier that morning.
