But the Christmas event finds the ever-popular obstacle course covered from top to bottom with thousands of colorful lights that shift and shimmer in time with festive holiday music.

Rebirth Of The Ku Klux Klan

1915 was the year of the rebirth of the Ku Klux Klan, a white supremacist organization. Members assembled at Stone Mountain with permission of quarry owner Samuel Venable, an active member. Their activities, including annual cross-burnings, continued for over 40 years, but Stone Mountains association with the Klan began to erode when the State of Georgia began to acquire the mountain and surrounding property in 1958. In 1960, Governor Ernest Vandiver condemned the property the state had purchased in order to void the perpetual easements Venable had granted the Klan. This ended any official link between Stone Mountain and the Klan.

Fun Things To Do At Stone Mountain Christmas

As a boy growing up in the North Georgia suburbs east of Atlanta, Stone Mountain Park was a huge part of my childhood.

So when I grew up and had a daughter, visiting Stone Mountain for its fun festivals became an annual tradition.

Of all their celebrations, Stone Mountain Christmas was by far our favorite.

Christmas in Stone Mountain was like visiting a mountain town from days gone by, with Christmas train rides, caroling, funny shows, visits with Santa, snow tubing, and more.

Back then the Stone Mountain Christmas lights were some of the biggest in Georgia, with the entire Crossroads area, the train route, and the North Georgia mountain itself covered in colorful lights.

As my daughter grew up, newer Christmas attractions emerged, and Christmas at Stone Mountain Park remained virtually unchanged, our interest waned.

But our recent trip to see the Christmas lights at Stone Mountain showed us how much the celebration has changed. It also reminded me of why we fell in love with the Georgia Christmas event nearly 20 years ago!

Read on for our in-depth guide to 10 fun things to do at Stone Mountain Christmas, which includes info on tickets, parking, and all of the must-see holiday attractions.

Listen To The Crossroads Christmas Carolers

If you like live music, youll want to swing by Celebration Circle to catch the Crossroads Carolers.

Performing anywhere from 3 to 6 times per day, depending on which day you visit, these lovely lasses offer up some of your favorite Christmas carols with a snazzy twist.

Surrounded by Christmas trees and colorful Christmas lights, the trio offers 15 minutes of holiday tunes, encouraging participation and audience interaction.

Its a great way to celebrate the small town tradition of Christmas caroling, and its sure to put a smile on your face and a jazzy jingle in your step.

    What Is Stone Mountain

Stone Mountain Park covers 3200 acres of forests, creeks and exposed rock. Stone Mountain itself takes its name from the enormous deposit of granite in the middle of the Georgia hills. Its reminiscent of the granite hills of Yosemite. And it just so happens that on the face of the mountain is a carved relief of confederate leaders from the Civil War. Not cool.

Beyond the carved relief on the face of the mountain, Stone Mountain has tons of hiking and walking trails through acres of natural beauty, there are some historic sites, and also some family friendly attractions/rides. Heck, theres even fishing and golfing at Stone Mountain.
