Things To Do In Rhode Island: The Elms

TRYP by Wyndham Savannah Downtown/Historic District Hotel Tour | Instagramable Hotel in Savannah GA

The Elms became a National Historic Landmark in 1996 after having been occupied from the late 1800s to the mid-1960s by the Berwind family. Used as a summer home, Mr. Berwind commissioned architect Horace Trumbauer to construct it, drawing inspiration from the mid-18th century French Chateau d’Asnieres.

The stately home was completed in 1901 and featured interior designs and furnishings by Paris designers Allard and Sons. It became the backdrop to Berwind’s accumulation of 18th century oriental jades and French and Venetian paintings. Guests can see this lovely home, artifact collections, and intricate Classic Revival gardens by joining one of the hourly Servant Life tours or audio tours.

Explore Street Art In Downtown

You wouldnt think of a modest university town as home to innovative street art, but youll be surprised. Vast, richly-colored murals adorn walls all over downtown, promoted by initiatives like The Avenue Concept. These murals are often unobtrusive, using earthy tones rather than neons and reflecting different aspects of life in this area and the country as a whole.

Sometimes it feels like walking around a living, breathing art gallery as the gorgeous murals weave into the tradition of the city perfectly. Again, you can take a tour of the public art if you want more details, or simply explore.

What To Do In Rhode Island: Rosecliff Mansion

The Rosecliiff Mansion was commissioned by Theresa Fair Oelrichs, a Nevada silver heiress in 1899. Modeled after the Grand Trianon – the garden oasis of French kings at Versailles – and designed by architect Stanford White, it was completed in 1902.

Throughout the years, Mrs. Oelrichs hosted lavish parties, including her famed fairytale dinner with special guest magician, Harry Houdini. The mansion was eventually gifted to the Preservation Society by subsequent owners Mr. and Mrs. J. Edgar Monroe, complete with furnishings and an endowment, in 1971. It’s currently open to the public for tours and private events and features annual exhibits.

Bellevue Avenue Mansions Newport

The grandest and most famous of Newport’s mansions spread grandly in a row between Bellevue Avenue and the ocean Cliff Walk gives views of the ocean side, while a stroll down Bellevue reveals their facades and grand entrances.

Rosecliff belonged to one of Newport’s most legendary hostesses, and was designed after Louis XIV’s Grand Trianon at Versailles. Its grand ballroom Newport’s largest was the setting for The Great Gatsby and True Lies.

, built in 1892, was designed by the same architect as The Breakers, but pre-dates it. Modeled on the Petit Trianon at Versailles , the house has an opulent gold-encrusted ballroom, inspired by the hall of Mirrors at Versailles.

More personal and the only one that was really lived in as a home Rough Point is at the far end of Bellevue Avenue and Cliff Walk. It is also the only of the mansions whose furnishings and collections remain as they were. Heiress Doris Duke collected art and antiques with a discerning eye, and a tour here is like visiting her private home, filled with treasures she chose and loved.
