Huge Things In Tiny Rhode Island

21 Free Things to do in Newport Rhode Island (With images)

The smallest state in America is often the butt of jokes. Rhode Island is neither a road nor an island, and it was once famously parodied in the now-defunct website How Many Rhode Islandsa simple tool that allowed you to see just how many Rhode Islands could squeeze inside a given country. The United States could contain 3,066 Rhode Islands, and Russia could hold 5,445.But the tiny state has a rather grand history. Rhode Island was founded on the principle of religious freedom, was the first of the Thirteen Colonies to renounce its allegiance to the British Crown, and was one of only two states not to ratify the 18th Amendment, which prohibited the manufacture and sale of alcohol. Many of the states attractions still loom large, including a 58-foot-long blue fiberglass termite and an improbably large blue bear slumped under a lampshade. As the pandemic continues, we hope this virtual trip helps you explore Americas wonders. If you do choose to venture out, please follow all guidelines, maintain social distance, and wear a mask.

Visit The Beaches Of South County

Theres a reason its called the Ocean State. Take your car and cruise by Matunuck Beach road for two miles onto Route 1. Stretches of open road take you past scenic cliffside views, ice cream stands dot the way, and the cool ocean mist sails through your open windows. Leave the farmers fields in your rearview mirror. White picket fences ahead stand crooked under the weight of overgrown vines and fuschia roses, color explosions of summer.

For east coast residents, Rhode Island beaches offer the perfect summer escape. Like them, we recommend leaving the big city behind you for a bit. Theres much to be discovered among private coves and the gentle foaming waves. These are just a few reasons why South County is the underrated hero of the east coast.

Why We Love Them

Rhode Island beaches are wonderfully simple and unpretentious. South County is home to 100 miles of sand and twenty different public beaches. Some of our favorites include Narragansett Town Beach and East Matunuck State Beach . While the waters from Block Island arent exactly the caliber of Fiji, the rocky strands, sun, and sand certainly have their own unique appeal.

Last but not least, youll find plenty of hidden treasures in the local hotel scene. Interiors are heavily influenced by 1960s surf culture, offer simple but lovely views, offering all the accommodations you need for a beach home away from home. Scoping out the beaches is definitely one of the top things to do in Rhode Island.

If you love a hotel which inspired creatively and its in touch with its local community, the Dean is going to be the place for you. Not quite as opulent as the luxury boutique hotels in Manhattan, but the Dean isnt trying to be either.. Filled with custom furniture, craftwork from local purveyors, and found objects from Europe and beyond, The Dean revels in the details. Not to mention, the Dean is supremely located in the Providence downtown with almost all the cities top attractions within easy walking distance.

The barista here is very friendly and able to expertly craft the caffeinated beverage of your choosing from rich espresso to smooth lattes, and their specialty, Chemex, to share. While we cant recommend the baked goods here we were slightly obsessed with the chic lounge fit-out and fun neon signs.

In the evening, head to the hip Dean Bar lounge, which crafts modern cocktails in a creative space that encourages you to stay for just one more with cozy sofas and intimate lighting. Perfect for meeting friends, strangers, and lovers.

Enjoy Meeting The Animals At Roger Williams Park Zoo

With 40 acres of gorgeous woodland, the Roger Williams Park Zoo is a chance to see wildlife from all around the world in a naturalistic environment. Its one of the oldest zoos in the USA as it first opened in 1872 with a collection that included guinea pigs, mice, and squirrels. Things are a bit more exciting now as you can see things like elephants from Africa, snow leopards, moon bears, and even a Komodo dragon so its improved a lot over the years!

There are several areas to the zoo, including Marco Polos Adventure Trek, which introduces you to animals from Asia, the Wetlands Trail, which focuses on species native to Rhode Island, and the new Explore and Soar feature, which offers a zip line ride. There are lots of interactive zones as well, plus a state-of-the-art rainforest building complete with waterfall.

We are obsessed with wildlife when we travel orangutans in Borneo, whale sharks in Mexico, tigers in Indias, so normally would avoid zoos. But we made an exception here, and were glad we did. The Roger Williams Park Zoo really does let you get up, close and personal with the animals and we cant wait for them to complete their renovations and become one of the worlds best zoos.
