The Gulf Colorado And Santa Fe Railroad Depot
The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad Depot was built in 1900 and was used a place where settlers would meet visitors to Pearland and would also pick up supplies for the town such as mail and livestock.
As such, this was a place of extreme historical importance in the area, and visitors to modern day Pearland are lucky to be able to see a preserved and restored version of the original depot which was kindly donated to the city after it closed for the last time in the 1970s.
Inside the depot, there is a visitors center that will fill you in on the historical significance of this building and its role in Pearlands development.

Best Things To Do In Pearland
The quaintly named Pearland in the state of Texas sits in Brazoria County, and while you may think that the most famous thing about this city is the fruit from which it takes its name, there are actually a whole number of other great reasons to visit here.
Pearland was established in 1894 and was actually better known for its figs than its pears, as early settlers flocked here and set up what is now a thriving city of over 100,000 residents.
Pearland was given its name by a polish nobleman named Witold von Zychlinski, who saw the number of fruit trees in Pearland and decided that this would be a good name for the settlement, and nowadays you can even go on edible walking trails to sample some of the citys famous fruit.
As well as walking trails, there are outdoor activities galore here such as lakes, golf courses, and verdant areas of parkland, or if you prefer indoor pursuits then there are a range of sites of historical interest located in Pearland.
Where Is Handicapped Parking
Accessible parking is located onsite at Independence Park, 3919 Liberty Drive. NOTE: Vehicles must enter the park from Liberty Dr. Access from John Lizer Rd. will not be possible due to the road’s closure. Accessible parking will only be provided to vehicles with handicap placards and will be available on a first-come first-served basis.
From Friendswood: Take Broadway/FM 518 west to Liberty Drive. Turn left on Liberty Drive and proceed approximately 1 mile to the park entrance.
From SH 288: Take Broadway/FM 518 east approximately 9.5 miles to Liberty Drive. Turn right on Liberty Drive and proceed approximately 1 mile to the park entrance.
From Pearland Parkway: Take Broadway/FM 518 east 1 mile, towards Friendswood. Turn right on Liberty Drive.

The area is also known for its fantastic and diverse bird watching opportunities, and if you happen to be visiting from July to September, you will find an abundance of coastal birds in the wetlands.
Should you want to know more about the local flora and fauna, then you can learn all about it at the environmental complex, and situated close to the building itself is something of a quirky attraction in the area.
As you cross over the road, you will come to Pearlands first edible trail, which is actually a nature trail that is dotted with fruit trees that visitors are allowed to sample.

Shadow Creek Ranch Disc Golf
If you want to try your hand at something a little different in the Pearland area then why not have a go at disc golf? Shadow Creek Ranch Disc Golf is centered on an area of parkland, and has a number of baskets into which competitors can try to throw discs.
At Shadow Creek Ranch Disc Golf a course is laid out for you to follow, and you can also take in the rest of the Shadow Creek Ranch parklands which include a nearby playground as well as walking trails through the pretty landscape.
Admire The Sri Meenakshi Temple
The Sri Meenakshi Temple is the only one outside of India dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi, wife of Shiva. The Temple is absolutely beautiful to look at! Its nice to experience a different culture right here in Pearland.
Take a self-guided tour of the Sri Meenakshi Temple by using the dedicated brochure or stop in the Pearland Visitors Bureau to pick one up. You may visit the Temple from 8:30 AM to 1 PM and 5 PM to 8:30 PM daily.
Note: Make sure to wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, as it is a place of worship. You will also be asked to remove your shoes before entering the Temple. If you dont want to walk around barefoot, bring a pair of socks.

John Hargrove Environmental Complex
One of the best outdoor features of Pearland is the John Hargrove Environmental Complex. The complex features a mile long trail that takes you through wetlands and beautiful trees and youll definitely want to bring your binoculars along for some bird watching. Along a section of the trail, there are fruit trees that visitors are allowed to sample. If you havent visited the John Hargrove nature park, we highly recommend it.
Make It A Pear Scavenger Hunt
Pearlands painted Pear-scape is a notable feature of the area, with 20 pears commissioned by local artists scattered around 10 locations in town. Theres a map to follow along with three versions of scavenger hunts one for adults and two for children. Many pears are clustered in groups, so you can find your favorite without driving all over town, the easiest to hit being Pearland Town Center, City Hall, in front of a gorgeous gazebo, and the hike and bike trail at Independence Park.
