Portsmouth is a relatively compact port city, with most of its tourist attractions quite close together in the historic center. Many of the hotels below are also in the center, within walking distance of the main things to do. We recommend these convenient hotels in Portsmouth, handy to the top historic houses and tourist attractions:

Driving The Kancamagus Highway

The Kancamagus Highway stretches for 56 miles through northern New Hampshires White Mountains. Its a twisty, two lane highway that reaches up to 3,000 feet in elevation, with stunning views across the White Mountains, making it one of the most scenic drives in NH.

There are many hiking and camping spots along the Kanc that lead into the picturesque White Mountains, with plenty of waterfalls and streams just off the road.

We stopped at all the scenic lookouts, soaking up the views, and popped in to sample the hiking trails.

Tip: We visited New Hampshire in the summer, and the views were spectacular, but this would be a perfect spot for amazing views of fall foliage if you travel in autumn. If wed been able to see the foliage, this would probably been our favorite of these family things to do in NH.

New Hampshire shines any time of the year, but fall is a particularly spectacular season. The fall foliage is magnificent and the New England weather is crisp, but not too cold. You can hike the White Mountains, or climb the highest peak in Mt. Washington, then enjoy tax-free shopping. My youngest daughter spent many years at summer camp in New Hampshire and we came to love the state, even camping there and biking to her Parents Visitation Day. We return for the fall foliage and craft beer, and always find something new to enjoy.

Winters are so cold that Dartmouth College has its students take a winter term off, and go to school one summer. Dartmouth also holds its family weekend in the summer, which always coincided with camp visiting day. We have skied at Bretton Woods at Mt. Washington, which requires extreme weather gear and an imperviousness to the cold. But you are rewarded with snowy slopes and extreme beauty.

Thars Gold In Them Thar Hills

You can hope to be invited to breakfast at Tiffanys or take matters into your own hands. Grab a donut, pick and hammer and visit Ruggles Mine in Grafton and seek out amethyst and garnets in the rough where prospectors first started working in 1803. Every year blasting is done to open up new areas for prospecting. While there, visit the museum and souvenir stand.

Anybody can wade into a river, but how about making it pay? Why not try panning for gold in the Wild Ammonoosuc River? Granted, youre more apt to get sunburned than get rich, but the thrill is in the hunt and its a great way to cool off.

A minor New Hampshire gold rush began when the precious metal was discovered in Lyman in 1864. Several small mines soon opened in the Bath area. Prospectors began operating sluice boxes in the Wild Ammonoosuc, and they have been at it ever since with the payoff rising and falling with the price of gold. You may not find enough of the precious metal to build a mansion, but many have found enough to fashion a glass pendant filled with glittering gleanings to wear around the neck.

New Hampshire Points Of Interest: Madame Sherri Forest

The Madame Sherri Forest near Chesterfield in New Hampshire is named after the eccentric and rather infamous Madame Antoinette Sherri, who once lived in an extravagant castle on the site of the forest. The forest is the starting point of one of the regions most popular hiking trails, the Ann Stokes Loop Trail, which winds through two miles of beautiful New Hampshire landscape and covers several different terrains.

Along the way you will be able to see all that remains of the Madame Sherri castle after it was destroyed by a fire in 1962. Remnants of the chimney, foundations, and a grand staircase will give you an idea of the grand scale of the former building. Hikers can also explore several other scenic trails in the forest.

Governor John Langdon House

Frequently listed as one of the finest Georgian homes in America, the 1785 Governor John Langdon House features ornate woodwork and period decoration and furnishings that reflect the position and prosperity of a prominent Portsmouth merchant. When he built this house, John Langdon was President of the New Hampshire Senate, later becoming a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, a U.S. Senator, and three-term governor of New Hampshire.

Among the visitors the Langdons welcomed to their Portsmouth home was President George Washington on his visit to the state in 1789. The original English-built harpsichord in the parlor is likely the one the Langdons’ daughter played for the president. Behind the home stretches a lawn surrounded by hedges and a border of period perennials.

One of the largest tourist attractions in Portsmouth is Strawbery Banke, which transports visitors back in time. This piece of the Seacoast is encased in an old-timey bubble where the staff is always in character, dressed in 1800s garb and asking about what your doohickey is.

Founded in 1958, this town within a town is home to 37 structures 21 of which were restored and interpreted to represent life from the 1600s up until the year it was founded. The easiest way to reach the top of Mount Washington, the highest elevation in the northern Appalachians at more than 6,000 feet, is on the steep Cog Railway that has been carrying tourists since it opened, the first of its kind in the world, in 1869. Those who long for the nostalgia of an authentic coal-fired steam engine train, can reserve the steamer special morning departures from late May through late October.

At the top, the Sherman Adams Visitors Center houses a small museum a cafeteria and the Mount Washington Observatory, a research station that studies extreme weather conditions, for which the mountain is notorious. In 1934, the world record wind speed was recorded here.
