Dress Up And Put On A Short Play
Give kids a theme, such as a summertime picnic or a winter kingdom, and ask them to put together a short play to present to you later. It should have a beginning, a middle and an ending, but the rest is up to them. Encourage them to get into it by using whatever they can find to dress up as characters.

- Create a summer reading list together. Give your children more latitude in deciding what they want to read. Everyone needs to read books that are just for sheer joy.

- Take up baking. Most kids this age either love to cook or bake. Chocolate chip cookies are a great motivator with my boys in learning how to bake.
- Ice skating. My boys love to iceskate in the summer when the days are hot. It also burns off excess energy. I love the quiet and calm at home when we come back because they are too tired to start any sibling rivalry.
- Take them to a homeschool convention. You know they dont just sell curriculum there. My boys picked out hands-on science projects and crafts they liked to do. It can also be an opportunity for them to look at curriculum they will be using in the upper grades.

If you have an idea how to make the subject youre teaching that week more interesting, it will galvanize your students learning.
A great example of this is having them cook or do gardening activities. The math involved in cooking and gardening oftentimes has a hidden meaning behind what theyre doing which makes it easier for the student to see what theyre doing and why it matters. Having these kinds of activities planned as often as possible will make sure your students have a better grasp of their subjects.
When you are planning, try using different methods to decide what kind of activities or projects you want to do. For example, how have you planned out which activities and subjects to cover? The first thing I do is divide the class into different categories of students and see if their interests coincide with what I want them to know.
If a student shows great interest in cooking or computers, for instance, I want to find a way, even if its ever so slightly, to incorporate that into the class. By doing this, you are able to find more uses for your subjects and engage the students further.
