Downtown Marietta is beautiful!

  • If youre not camping in Wayne National Forest, be sure to stay downtown There are a couple of great hotels that are right in the center of the walkable downtown. Marietta may not be a huge nightlife destination, but it is beautiful at night, and staying downtown will allow you to take in the sites. We recommend the Historic Lafayette Hotel, which has a ton of character, is supposedly haunted and will give you an awesome view of the river. You can even capture a great cityscape from the roof!
  • The best time to visit is spring and fall Isnt that the case all over the place? Spring is beautiful in southeastern Ohio. Flowers are blooming, everyone is outside, and the weather is mild. Summer is hot but great for kayaking and canoeing. Fall is crisp and cool, and theres a pretty colorful foliage season. Visit in the winter if youve no other choice.
  • Visiting in the summer? Sunscreen and bug spray, especially if youre taking advantage of all the awesome outdoor activities.
  • Visiting in the spring? Bring a rain jacket.

Discover Ohios Largest National Forest

The Wayne National Forest covers more than a 250,000 acres in the Appalachian Foothills of Southeastern Ohio. Within this gem of a wilderness, youll find 300 miles of trails, several covered bridges, five campgrounds, and an elaborate series of waterways for all kinds of recreational opportunities. There is seriously so much exploring to do in the Wayne National Forest, that Ive got to plan a whole new adventure.

Our day hike did allow us to explore the so-called Great Cave, which was more of an overhang, but still really cool, the Hune Covered Bridge, and the Irish Run Natural Bridge. Because we hiked on a warm day in May, it was awesome to be trekking through the forest, which was a good 5 degrees cooler than the open areas.

The natural bridge was particularly lovely its one of the largest natural bridges in Ohio, at 51 feet long and 39 feet high. You can walk across it or underneath it via a short, but steep trail. It was delightfully cooler under the bridge a perfect picnic spot on a warm summer day. You can actually, continue on this trail for another nine miles, looping back to your car. We basically returned the way we came, which brought our hike to about 3 miles.

Christmas With The Georgia Boy Choir

Things to do in Atlanta Georgia 2021

One of my favorite Atlanta Christmas memories was performing holiday concerts with the Atlanta Boy Choir in the early 80s, under the direction of maestro Fletcher Wolfe.

The Georgia Boy Choir was founded in 2009 by David White, who led the ABC for 8 years after Wolfes retirement .

Their annual Christmas concert in Atlanta features all five levels of the choir, accompanied by a full orchestra and the Peachtree Road UMCs Mighty Mander Organ.

The performance will include a lively mixture of sacred classics, beloved Christmas carols, and modern holiday favorites. For me, its sure to bring back memories of my time in one of the worlds most respected choirs.

Governors Mansion Tree Lighting Ceremony & Tours

Fun Things to Do in Marietta Ohio

One of my favorite memories of Atlanta at Christmas time is 1980, when I was a touring member of the Atlanta Boy Choir. We performed at the Great Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Governors Mansion Tree Lighting Ceremony , then had a sold-out run performing with the Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and ASO Chorus.

Less well-known and more intimate than most Christmas events in Atlanta, this annual tree lighting ceremony will find Governor Brian Kemp opening the doors of the Greek revival-style Bulkhead mansion to visitors.

The event will include festive music, tasty treats, and The Peoples House all decked out for the Atlanta holidays.

The mansion also offers Christmas Tours, and all parking and admissions are free. But they do encourage visitors to bring new unwrapped Toys for Tots, and they have drop boxes located at the front entrance.

The Basilica Of Saint Mary Of The Assumption

Once the Church of Saint Mary of the Assumption, parishioners have gathered in this place of worship since 1838. In 2013, a great distinction was given and this church became a minor basilica. The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Assumption is simply gorgeous and a sight to behold to both Catholics and non-Catholics. The ornate decor, including a carved Italian marble altar and art glass are simply beautiful.

Southern Museum Of Civil War And Locomotive History

Located in Kennesaw, roughly 6 miles from Marietta, the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History probably needs to further explanation as to its contents.

Among the fine collection of civil war items and artifacts, visitors wont fail to notice the General, the engine of a steam locomotive used in the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862.

Another important moment during the civil war, the chase saw a group of Unionists wreak havoc on the rail lines to Tennessee onboard the General while being chased much of the way by Confederate soldiers in another locomotive called the Texas.

Another exhibit is the French Merci boxcar, which arrived in 1949 full of gifts from France to thank Americans for their efforts in Europe during the Second World War.
