Alabama Constitution Hall Park

Alabama Constitution Hall Park, sometimes called the Constitution Village, is definitely in the top 10 things to do in Huntsville.

Located in the oldest portion of the citys downtown area, it is a historic commemoration of the 1819 Constitutional Convention.

During this convention, Alabama was admitted to the Union, being the 22nd state to achieve this.

Alabama Constitution Hall Park lets you step back in time to the 1800s.

The park contains eight different buildings reconstructed to perfection from the era.

This includes a post office, working blacksmith, print shop, cabinet maker, and library.

These buildings, made from wood, let you learn about how they may have looked and functioned back in the day.

Youll even get to see a working printing press and view John Coffees Land Surveying offices genuine survey artifacts!

Its a fun way to visit the past of Huntsville.

Where To Eat In Huntsville

Huntsville has a great food scene and here are some of the restaurants I tried in Huntsville and can personally recommend. For more on all the delicious food I ate on this trip, check out my article on the food of Alabama.

The Blue Plate Cafe | This traditional diner offers the full Southern Breakfast experience, of bacon, eggs, cheesy grits, biscuit and gravy washed down by bottomless coffee. It attracts all the locals who relish their childhood favourites of fried chicken, collard greens, fried green tomatoes and a slice of pie.

Pane e Vino | An Italian inspired restaurant with outdoor terrace at the Huntsville Museum of art in Big Spring Park. The restaurant is owned by leading local chef Jame Boyce who also owns the upscale Cotton Row Restaurant and offers relaxed dining with pizza, salads and pasta dishes.

Connors Steak & Seafood: In the Bridge Street Town Centre neighbourhood, serving steak and seafood with bags of Southern flair. I enjoyed the Cajun Red Grouper mesquite grilled with couscous and collard greens and Voodoo Shrimp in spicy remoulade sauce.

A. M. Booths Lumberyard: I heard good things about this food and live music venue, set around an old lumberyard. The Blue Bayou railway carriage makes a unique centrepiece and dining venue, but there are a number of bars, patio and restaurant areas, making Booths Lumberyard a relaxed place to hang out in the evening or at weekends.

The Grave Of Miss Baker

Miss Baker is an incredibly loved part of aviation and space exploration history.

Her grave is situated outside of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, free to view without entering the museum.

But Miss Baker is not a human being.

She is a squirrel monkey.

The space race of the 20th century saw controversial testing practices performed by the United States and the Soviet Union.

One of these practices was the act of sending non-human creatures into space.

The American space program had been able to recover fruit flies sent into sub-orbital areas alive, but never anything more complex.

The animals they used kept dying.

Eventually, the space program purchased a selection of monkeys from pet stores to continue this animal testing.

Two monkeys among the bunch stood out, outperforming others in tests of endurance.

These monkeys were the squirrel monkey Miss Baker and the rhesus monkey Miss Able.

In 1959, the pair were confined in metal monitoring capsules, fitted with jackets and caps, and surgically implanted with electrodes.

They were then launched into space inside a Jupiter rocket, bringing them 300 miles into the sky.

The flight took only 16 minutes and soon after, the rocket landed safely.

This was the first time this safe landing was achieved.

Miss Baker and Miss Able were retrieved from the rocket in the Atlantic Ocean.

Both were alive, a first for the American space program.

Surgeons removed the implanted electrodes from them.

Best Time Of Year To Visit Huntsville

Huntsville is a good city to visit year round. It really depends what you want to do and see in the city. For example if you are coming for Panoply Arts Festival, it normally takes place at the end of April.

It does get quite hot in the summer months, especially June through September. The summer months are also the most popular times to visit, so you will find it to be generally more expensive and there will be more visitors in the city in July and August.

Our suggestion would be to try and visit during the shoulder months if you can: March through May or September through November. You should get the best balance in terms of weather, visitor numbers, and prices.

Algonquin Park is 42 kilometers from Huntsville and is one of the best parks in Ontario. This 7,653-square-kilometer area of forests, lakes, rivers, and mountains has long been a destination for outdoor adventurers. No matter where your interests may lie, the park has something for you.

One of the most popular pursuits in the park is camping. Families have been setting up camp in one of the main campgrounds along the Highway 60 corridor through the generations. Beautiful sites are nestled under towering white pine trees, with lakes and beaches just a short walk from your tent or trailer. If you prefer a more sophisticated accommodation option, three luxurious but rustic lodges are sprinkled throughout the park.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a canoe or the equipment, outfitters in and around the park can set you up with all the gear, food, and safety equipment. Or, alternatively take a two day tour complete with a guide and experience the best the park has to offer.

Other popular pursuits in the park include amazing hiking trails and challenging mountain biking trails. For those less inclined to activity, a visit to the Algonquin Art Centre or the Algonquin Logging Museum is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

Brett Welcher / Shutterstock

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute should be on the bucket list of any American history buff.

Civil rights activists were highly active in Alabama in the 1950s and 1960s, and as such, it makes sense that Birmingham in the state is the site of one of the best places to learn about this powerful movement.

In 1992, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute opened its doors for the first time, welcoming 25,000 guests in its first week alone.

It tells the story of the development of civil rights, the actions of those who fought for it, and the struggle that still continues to this day for equal treatment.

The things to see within the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute are explorable independently through self-guided walks.

As you pass through the exhibits, youll follow the journey of the movement and end on a positive note, as the institute hopes to light a spark of hope for the future through its message.

Everyone Can Play At The Splash Pad

This is literally the most epic splash pad I have ever heard of anywhere!

With an active little water baby, splash pads are a lifesaver for us during the summer months. Shes still little enough to where most waterparks are not worth the money for the few attractions she can actually enjoy. Splash pads however, are a super economical way for her to get a water park fix.

The Everyone Can Play Splash Pad at Brahan Springs Park has 51 water features. There are water cannons, sprinklers, dump buckets, bubble geysers and roll arches that are wheelchair accessible . There is no shade so bring an umbrella, small pop-up tent or be otherwise prepared. There are benches, a couple of picnic tables and a playground adjacent to the splash pad.
