If you happen to visit Connecticut in June, you cant miss roaming Americas Oldest Rose Garden, in Elizabeth Park. It has the distinction of being the first municipal rose garden in the United States and it is also currently the third largest rose garden in the country. Located in Hartford, the park is free and open year round to the public, with six other gardens that have blooms from May until October, so theres plenty to do even if youre not present for the rose season. Although there is also a cafe onsite, picnicking is allowed throughout the park and visitors are also welcome to bring their dogs.

Helping to keep the towns history alive, the New Fairfield Historical Society meets every 2nd Wednesday of the month in the New Fairfield Librarys Historical Room in the basement.

The societys main property is the Little Red Schoolhouse, a 19th-century one-room school building on Brush Hill Road.

The schoolhouse opens for programs throughout the year, when youll get a taste of education in the days when New Fairfield was a farming community.

In 2019 to celebrate the societys 50th anniversary there was a letter-boxing treasure hunt Little Red Schoolhouse.

Green Chimneys Farm & Wildlife Center

More than 200 farm animals and injured wild species have a permanent home at this center just over the state line at Putnam Lake.

Green Chimneys is a multifaceted non-profit organization, mainly serving children and young people who have struggled in traditional learning environments with animal-assisted therapy at its heart.

On weekends the center opens to the public, and you can come by to look around the teaching barn, horse barn and outdoor paddocks between 10:00 and 15:00. Groups of six or more will have to sign up for a tour, and this takes in pigs, camels, llamas, horses, donkeys, cows, goats and many more animals, and also features pony rides and hayrides for wee ones.

Alternatively the Farm & Wildlife Tour will introduce you to non-domestic animals like owls, snakes, falcons and a condor, eagle and tortoise.

Lake Mohegan A Hidden Gem Of Fairfield

Lake Mohegan is one of Fairfields hidden gems. The local legend is that this lake is actually man-made. It supposedly used to be an old stone quarry that eventually became filled with rain water during a series of storms. Who knows if thats true- but we know for sure is that its a ton of fun!

There is a small beach area at the lake that offers children a safe swimming spot, but the true treasure are the trails around the lake. Miles of trails wind around this little lake, and they are wonderful for hiking. Just make sure you love dogs! These trails have become super popular with dog owners because the rivers and streams around offer some nice places for dogs to hop in the water. Its a great place to go for a swim, hike, or dog walk!
