West Point On The Eno River

This park along the Eno River covers over 400 acres and has three historic buildings. Its the perfect combination of history and natural scenery.

There are five miles of nature trails that follow the river and some surrounding bluffs. Theres also an amphitheatre, fishing areas, rapids that are great for paddling, and picnic facilities.

The highlight of the park is West Point Mill. Once one of 32 mills along the river, it has been rebuilt on the site of what was the largest mill. At its height, it was the centre and heartbeat of a 300 family community. Its a working mill once again and you can buy products there at the shop.

Take a tour of the restored mill owners home as well as the old tobacco pack house which is now home to the Hugh Mangum Museum of Photography.

With no ethnic majority, theres plenty of diversity in the culinary department. First up, chow down on legit Zimbabwean food at Zwelis. Its in a strip mall next to a nail salon but never mind the location: chef and owner Zweli cooks the food of her homeland with a touch of local charmtheres peanut butter in the greens and Carolina chillies in the piri piri chicken. At Cuban-leaning COPA, husband and wife team Elizabeth Turnbull and Roberto Copa-Matos run a farm-to-table operation. Warning: this is not health food.

Funky tapas bar Mateo is where the local office workers dine, particularly at lunchtime on a Tuesday when theres a 2 for $10 deal on the tapas. The home to the Durham Bulls, Durham Bulls Athletic Park opened in 1995 in downtown Durham. It was expanded to fit 10,000 seats in 1998, when the Bulls started playing in the Triple-A International League.

The stadium was designed so that all fans can have a great view of the field in total comfort. A roof covers about 2,500 seats. All seats are extra wide with extra legroom, and most have cup holders. The ballpark, called the Blue Monster, has many similarities to Fenway Park the Green Monster.
