Colorado Springs is the second-largest city in Colorado. It is about an hour south of Denver and just east of the southern Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. While Colorado Springs has its airport, its only about 1.5 hours from the Denver airport, making it very convenient to get to, no matter where you fly into.

Colorado Springs Travel Tips
Access to Colorado Springs is available by car, bus, or plane. Colorado Springs Airport, while not an international hub, is the second busiest airport in the state and is serviced by United, Delta, America, Allegiant and Frontier airlines. Alternately, flying into the Denver International Airport, you can rent a car or catch a bus and get to the Springs in a little over an hour and a half .
Youll find that there are four seasons here, with all the appropriate weather phenomena that go with it. Spring showers come and go, along with lightning, and the thaw brings about blooms both in the mountains and the desert areas. Summer is fairly moderate, with daytime temps in the high 70s and low 80s lots of sunshine with relatively cool evenings. Autumn brings some brilliant foliage, along with the first freeze of the year.
Summer is peak tourist season in Colorado Springs, which means there will be a lot more people visiting these locations and the prices are their highest.
Winter is cold, typically in the teens at night and in the 40s during the day, with rain, sleet, and snow at play. As noted throughout the post, some attractions are closed in the winter months however, at the same time, you will find a large variety of outdoor sports that you can take advantage of during this season. Skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, snowshoeing, etc., are all available during the winter months, making Colorado Springs a true year-round destination.

As you might expect from the city that hosts the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs is very proud of its aviation, and one of the best places to visit for aviation interests is the National Museum of World War II Aviation.
For starters, its located very near the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport and Peterson Air Force Base, so planes are constantly overhead.
It also boasts a wide variety of photos, texts, artifacts and other paraphernalia from both WWII and other airborne events of that time period.
As a visitor, you can take self-guided tours through the exhibits and galleries at any time.
You can also visit the hangar where planes are repaired and restored, but since that requires supervision, youll need to reserve a ticket in advance.
The National Museum of World War II Aviation is a must see destination for anyone interested in flight and flight history.

One of the essential things to do in Colorado Springs for both history buffs and aviation enthusiasts, even though it is relatively new, the National Museum of World War II Aviation brings the past to life in an incredibly vivid way.
Covering over 40,000 square feet in an old airport hangar, the building houses a whopping 28 fully restored flying aircraft from the war era, as well as 4,000 artifacts and historical documents in its educational exhibits, and a handful of ground-based military vehicles too.
Take note: the Museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Ok, so Im a bit of a Christmas fanatic and would happily celebrate the holiday year round. This Christmas-themed family amusement park is for kids of all ages. Visit Old Colorado City Historic District
Step back in time to 1859 and the Pikes Peak gold rush to Old Colorado City, the first capital of the Territory of Colorado and where miners would come for their goods. Today, the area is thriving with retailers, art studios and restaurants, though you can still find historic structures, as well as artifacts from the time period at the Old Colorado City History Center.

Go Outside For Free Entrance Days
Every year, the National Park Service offers Free Entrance Days into more than 400 National Parks.
The entrance fee is waived for a completely fee-free experience on specific days of the year.
There are 5 free entrance dates in 2020, just check their website for the exact dates.
Its important to note that though the fee is waved to enter the park, the other amenities such as camping, boat launches, transportation or special tours are still incurred.

The Space Foundationis one of our favorite vacation bargains. Not only is your admission under $15, it also includes the multitude of space-themed daytime events offered each month. Howl With The Wolves At The Colorado Wolf And Wildlife Center
Sitting a few miles outside of downtown Colorado Springs in the town of Divide, this charming wildlife rehabilitation center provides a unique opportunity to see wolves, wolf-hybrids, foxes and coyotes up close.
Led by friendly keepers, visitors can take an hour-long tour to meet all of the fluffy and friendly animals of Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center, learn about their evolution and habitat, and learn how they can help preserve what is a largely threatened ecosystem.

Camp In The Zirkel Wilderness Area
One of the best places to stay the night is under the stars in a tent. The Mount Zirkel Wilderness Area covers nearly 160,000 acres of open space in the Routt National Forest. It is home to about 70 lakes and even part of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. There are multiple camping sites here.
This area also has a lot of cabins you can rent, from charming, historic log cabins to little houses perched on mountaintops with breathtaking views. In the summer, hike to your cabin in the winter, ski to it.

Another way to experience a river in Colorado: ride a zip line 350 feet across the river at Glenwood Canyon Zipline Adventures, and then ride another zip line back again.All you need is the nerve to step off the platform: no skills required, and kids are welcome. A minimum height of 48 inches is required, and all kids must be accompanied by a participating adult.
