Moontower Saloon

Heres your chance to confront your childhood fear of clownsand to comfort yourself with cotton candy if that proves daunting. Were talking about a trip to The Venardos Circus, of course, which is posting up at South Austins Moontower Saloon through the beginning of October. Dont expect an ordinary Ringling Bros. experience howeverthis circus is animal-free and has traded in the usual juggling and acrobatic routine for something they describe as The American Circus with the heart of a Broadway Show. And, should the funny guys in makeup start to get under your skin, you can always pop out of the tent for a Lone Star at Moontower Saloon.

Cost: Tickets start at $26.50 per person

Austin Nature And Science Center

Austin Nature & Science Center

You wont want to miss the Austin Nature and Science Center.

While it offers family-friendly fun that can be enjoyed by all ages, it holds a special kind of magic for children.

Maybe its because of the wildlife center that houses everything from birds to bobcats.

Maybe its because of the dino pit where little paleontologists can dig up their own rocks, fossils and gemstones.

Maybe its just the fact that the Austin Nature and Science Center makes learning fun.

It isnt a dull place where you have to listen to tour guides drone on and on about things that you dont care about.

At this destination, you can enjoy education and entertainment all rolled into one, so it should please parents and kids alike.

When To Visit Austin

22 Fun Things to Do in Austin with Kids

Honestly, Austin is a year-round destination. The spring and fall are the most pleasant times to visit, with mostly gorgeous weather. Its also the most crowded/popular, with major events like the South by Southwest Festival and the Austin City Limits Music Festival .

Winters are pretty mild, although we do get several cold snaps and even freezing weather but theyre brief and two days later we might be in shorts and t-shirts again.

Summer is fun and there are lots going on then, but non-Southerners need to understand that Texas summers are hot. I mean, hot. July and August will routinely break 100 degrees daily but everything is air-conditioned, and the city has tons of places to keep cool, like natural swimming holes!

How To Get Around Austin

If you arent familiar with Texas, its not the most public-transportation friendly area of the country. But one of the ways Austin differs from the rest of the state is that Austin does have a pretty decent system with Cap Metro, which operates both a city-wide bus system and a light rail that runs between downtown to Leander, way north of the city.

You may not even need the bus, though. If youre staying in one of the concentrated neighborhoods of Austin downtown, Eastside, South Congress/Lamar, the University area or Midtown/North Central they are pretty walkable.

Austin is also a huge bicycling town, with lots of bike rental companies in town along with the ubiquitous electric scooters.

And if all else fails, theres always ride sharing and taxis. You can also rent a car direct from the airport and get around Austin at your own pace.

Now that you have all the when, where and how logistical tips, lets get down to the fun part: What should you do with a few days in the Lone Star State Capital City?

Hike Barton Creek Greenbelt

There are several different ways to get into the Greenbelt. My favorite entry point is past Loop 360 off of the Capitol of Texas highway. Hike one hour in and youll be greeted with waterfalls a relief from our humid Texas summers. Watch out for bikers as youre walking on the path . I like walking on the Butler Hike-and-Bike trail boardwalk!

Austin is like nowhere else in Texas. With ubiquitous live music and street art and a ridiculous amount of breakfast tacos and breweries, the city is brimming with character. As a native Texan and adopted Austinite, my sister has spent the last several years discovering all the fun things to do in Austin that locals love and arent tourist traps. Ive been lucky to have her as a guide to explore the best attractions youve heard of and many that may not be on your list yet.

Heres a look at some of our favorite things to see and do, as guided by a local.

The Flats is known to host large gatherings, even the occasional drum circle. Twin Falls offers one of the better waterfalls, and Sculpture Falls is known for a little solitude. There’s also great rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, and other outdoor activities that appeal to a wide array of outdoorsy types. It’s best when the water if flowing, even if it’s low just 15 – 20 cfs.

Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve

7 Fun things to Do in Austin This Weekend: Aug. 5

Larry D. Moore / CC BY-SA

Open every day from sunrise to sunset, the Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve is one of the last parts of Austin that remains untouched and undeveloped by civilization.

Its the perfect place for rugged, natural sightseeing, and its a must-do for anyone interested in the native flora and fauna of the state.

Hiking trails weave through cliffs and tree groves.

Waterfalls cascade over the rocks.

From a distance, you might hear the cry of the golden-cheeked warbler, an endangered species that makes its habitat on the protected land of the preserve.

Youll have to follow strict rules while touring the Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve.

Its one of those natural, carefully-tended sites where visitors are expected to conduct themselves properly.

If you can be responsible, however, the Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve is definitely at the top of our list of Austin attractions.

Where else can you get a natural experience like this?

Emma Long Metropolitan Park

Despite the abundance of lakes and ponds near Austin, it can be difficult to find a good spot for swimming.

Emma Long Metropolitan Park is where youll want to go to splash.

Open every day of the year, Emma Long Metropolitan Park is a beautiful and family-friendly location for swimming, biking, camping, picnicking and sightseeing.

The water is always mild, and theres a sandy shoreline for catching tadpoles and building sandcastles.

You can be forgiven for thinking that youre in Florida rather than Texas.

Do you hate sand in your shoes?

You can also hike, bike and camp on dry land.

Do you love wildlife observation?

See if you can spot the native birds and fish of Austin.

Emma Long Metropolitan Park isnt a wild and crazy place, but it can offer a fun time for families who just want to enjoy a sunny day together.

Bring a basket lunch slip off your shoes at the wooden docks. Stay awhile.

Top Things to Do in Austin Texas – Tasting SOTOL, CRAWFISH BOIL CRAZY Light Show!

Alamo Drafthouse is an institution. Its known for inventive festivals and for showing first-run and classic movies as well as blockbuster and art house films. It was one of the first movie theaters to add good food and beer to complete the movie-going experience. They even create unique menus to pair with the themes of certain movies. Theres always something new and different there.

The Drafthouse hosts special events throughout the year, but one of our favorite reasons to go is the regular Tuesday night trivia. Pop culture and movie experts will go far in trying to take home the nights prize.
