Hike Bike Or Climb At Red Rock Canyon Open Space

If you just cant get enough of Colorados fresh air and blue skies, Red Rock Canyon Open Space is another free recreation area located just south of Garden of the Gods. Not to be outdone by its neighboring park, this open space has some equally stunning red sandstone features.

You can hike, bike, or bring your dog for an on-leash walk on the trails at this city park. Or if getting in some vertical is more your style, the park also has around 80 climbing routes. Just grab a permit at the Garden of the Gods visitor center before getting on belay.

Though this park can still get busy, especially on the weekends, you can avoid the headache if youre willing to pay for premium parking at the Garden of the Gods. If you can, just try to get their early or visit midweek.

United States Mint Tour

To see where your currency is conceived , follow the money trail to the Denver U.S. Mint. The free, 45-minute tours are led by knowledgeable guides and provide a fascinating look into the history of coinage. Both kids and adults will love getting up close and personal with the shiny pocket change that streams off the production lines. Tours are available Mon.Thurs. from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Same-day tour tickets are available at the Tour Information window, which opens at 7 a.m. no advance tickets are available.

North Pole Colorado Springs

This amusement park is all Christmas all the time! Come to North Pole, Colorado for some year-round Santa-themed fun.

For more than 60 years, North Pole has played host to Santas workshop!

It is also home to the highest altitude ferris wheel in North America with more than 25 rides for kids and grown ups!

While you can come to the North Pole any time of year, theres something extra magical about a visit near the holidays.

If youre hosting family from out of town this year, this is a great stop to get in the festive mood.

The North Pole, Colorado is open Thursday through Monday and is closed Tuesday and Wednesdays.

Masks are required when going inside any of the buildings and are encouraged to wear when going outside.

There are family rides, child-only rides, and even infant-friendly rides available.

Online reservations are required during the winter season and admission is $20 per person. Children under 2 get in for free but still need a ticket for reservation.

Unlimited Ride Wristbands are available for just $10 each and children under 2 are free.

Admission includes access to all the rides, attractions, and visit to Santas Village!

    A couple of the undeveloped hot springs are right off the highway and you can be soaking in the river in a few steps. Penny Hot Springs near Carbondale is probably the easiest to access.

    If you are up for an epic adventure, some can only be accessed in the winter by snowshoe or cross-country skiing. Conundrum hot springs near Aspen is one of the most popular and require a permit to camp near in the summer. Which another benefit of visiting in the winter.

    Snowshoeing And Cross Country Skiing

    Okay, I said no downhill skiing but I cant go without mentioning snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Colorado has more than 20 official nordic centers and countless more areas for unofficial trips. Official Nordic tracks can be found in any of the ski towns such as Breckenridge, Crested Butte, Keystone, Vail are reserved for skiing and snowshoeing, if you do not want to deal with snowmobiles or other motorized activities.

    If you are up for a true outdoor adventure, snowshoeing and skiing can be transported to a destination such as Conundrum Hot Springs near Aspen or Emerald Lake near Denver in Rocky Mountain National Park.

    If you didnt bring your own gear you will need to acquire some. Of course, using your own or borrowing from a friend would be free but you rent from places like REI or pick up used on the local swap.

    Snowshoeing may be more like a cheap activity than a totally free thing to do in Colorado this winter but not even close to the cost of a lift ticket.
