Walk The Avenue Of Oaks At Wormsloe

One of Savannahs most photographed sights is the impressive avenue of oaks at Wormsloe Historic Site. Somewhat misleadingly named, Wormsloe is actually an old plantation with a troubled history, which isnt sufficiently acknowledged in its tours. Its therefore a somewhat complicated place to visit, but theres no denying the 1.5-mile avenue of oaks is impressive and its a good spot for a family walk.

The 31.551 acres Savannah National Wildlife Refuge is located in Chatham, Effingham, and Jasper counties in Georgia and South Carolina.

It is a wonderful refuge for bird watching, observing wildlife, and nature walks. The habitat is also a great place to spot endangered species.

And of course, the area is a popular tourist attraction because of its diverse wildlife, and it is one of the few places in the state where you can see a variety of native species.

You can see the wood ducks feeding with their downy offspring during the summer months. And you can also spot turtles and long-legged wading birds.

While there, you can tour the refuges museum and view the many displays and interactive exhibits too.

A drive to the refuges Laurel Hill Plantation is a great way to learn about its history. Laurel Hill is the site of a rice plantation, and there are alligators along the banks.

The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge has a visitor center located on SC 170, about seven miles from downtown Savannah. Its nature store features information about the various wildlife found in the area.

And there are plenty of hiking trails that you can try with your family. The azaleas are in peak bloom in March. So, plan your tour for March.

Forsyth Park is one of the most iconic spots in the entire city. This inviting park is massive in size comprising more than 30 acres in the middle of the city, and it features several amenities including 2 playgrounds and a central fountain. The fountain is especially unique as it’s modeled after the Place de la Concorde fountains in Paris, France. One of the most popular areas of the park is the central walking path with towering trees on either side making it feel as if you’re walking through a tunnel. If you visit during October, you’ll be able to see the Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra in action at the parks outdoor concert and event space.

Things To Do In Savannah Ga With Kids: City Market

City Market is the other main touristy area. As youd expect, it is lined with shops and restaurants. it is found two blocks south of River Street between Ellis Square and Franklin Square.

My personal favorite shop in City Market was The Georgia Tasting Room. I had the BEST time sampling six different wines from the region for only $3!

I think this is a must-do if you have any interest in wine at all. The tasting is free if you buy a bottle of wine.

My daughters favorite store was the toy store. Rhens Nest had a fantastic selection of toys and STEM activities to choose from.

The other shopping area is along Broughton Street, where The Paris Market and Leopolds are located. You will have no shortage of fun places to spend your money while in Savannah!

Savannah is known for its antebellum architecture, beautiful parks, horse-drawn carriages and its majestic oak trees, draped romantically in Spanish moss. With only two days to visit, we wanted to find the best things to do in Savannah with kids.

We visited Savannah, GA as part of our family road trip around the Southern USA. We arrived in Savannah after 3 exhausting days in Orlando, visiting Disney World with our kids. We wanted to see the historic side of Savannah, but after the recent theme park madness, we also desperately craved some nature. Savannah delivered very nicely on both accounts.

Leopolds is a legendary ice cream shop that claims to be the creators of the Tutti Frutti flavor. They started their recipe in 1919 and cant find any record of Tutti Frutti prior. See The Forrest Gump Bench

The beauty of Savannah is extremely underrated, but many film directors have used the city as a backdrop. One of the movies is none other than Forest Gump. Do you remember the scenes where Gump is contently sitting on a bench narrating his life to random people? What if I tell you that you can actually check out the very same bench? After the movie was critically acclaimed, the movie prop became a sort of treasured pop-cultural collectible. While in the movie, the bench was placed in Chippewa Square , it has now been moved to the Savannah History Museum.

See A Show At The Historic Savannah Theatre

If your family enjoys seeing plays, the Historic Savannah Theatre is one of the best venues in town. This theatre dates back to 1818, and it features all the posh surroundings you’d expect from a luxury theater from the early 19th century. You’ll find red plush chairs and classic red curtains on either side of the stage. Keep in mind that not every performance here is entirely family-friendly, so be sure to check what’s playing before getting a ticket to ensure the whole family can have a good time.

Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth

Leopolds is a Savannah institution, and their homemade, premium ice cream is well worth the wait! If you find yourself on Broughton Street, hop in line and get excited because it moves pretty quickly. Coke and coffee floats, ice cream sundaes and other old fashioned treats round out a visit to this one-stop shop for nostalgia and indulgence. Ships Of The Sea Museum

I found cheap tickets to the Savannah Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum on Groupon so we checked it out one afternoon. I only paid $4 each for admission with this Groupon deal.

The museum houses impressive replicas of ships important to Savannah and US history. Its not huge but is fascinating.

But here is a warning before you go there with kids: make sure your kiddos understand that they can NOT touch the glass on the displays and are able to control themselves enough to not do this.

I didnt prepare my daughter in advance and we were asked over a loudspeaker to not touch the glass then had an employee follow us from room to room with a bottle of Windex. Seriously.

So as long as your kids stay hands-off, Ships of the Sea is a unique diversion in Savannah and an interesting way to spend an hour or so.

Rent Bikes Or Take A Bike Tour

One thing we tried to do was rent a bike to tool around the city.

We wanted to rent a two-seat electric bike from Savannah on Wheels but the bike wasnt available the day we were there. I definitely suggest making a reservation in advance if you want to rent a specialty bike.

Or if you want someone to teach you about the sights while you view the city on wheels, take a historical bike tour like this one from Savannah on Wheels.

We definitely plan on doing this on our next visit to Savannah.

Things To Do In Savannah With Kids: Colonial Park Cemetery

If you dont have time to get out to the famous Bonaventure Cemetery, you can experience a taste of the same vibe right in town.

Colonial Park Cemetery is located just south of Oglethorpe Ave. close to the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

The above-ground monuments and Spanish moss add to the eerie atmosphere. The graves date back to the 18th century and some notable Savannahians are buried here.

Theres a playground at the south end of the park which was a welcome sight for my girl after so much structured time on our visit. I think a quick stop at this cemetery should be on anyones list of things to do in Savannah GA with kids.

Visit The Georgia State Railroad Museum

Next door to the history museum is the Georgia State Railroad Museum, which is a good option for any train-loving kids. It includes a big collection of steam and diesel trains, model railroads and all sorts of train machinery. The big model railway of Savannah is a favourite, plus an operating turntable in the roundhouse.
