Alabama Constitution Hall Park, sometimes called the Constitution Village, is definitely in the top 10 things to do in Huntsville.

Located in the oldest portion of the citys downtown area, it is a historic commemoration of the 1819 Constitutional Convention.

During this convention, Alabama was admitted to the Union, being the 22nd state to achieve this.

Alabama Constitution Hall Park lets you step back in time to the 1800s.

The park contains eight different buildings reconstructed to perfection from the era.

This includes a post office, working blacksmith, print shop, cabinet maker, and library.

These buildings, made from wood, let you learn about how they may have looked and functioned back in the day.

Youll even get to see a working printing press and view John Coffees Land Surveying offices genuine survey artifacts!

Its a fun way to visit the past of Huntsville.

Big Spring International Park

One of the top things to see in the downtown area is the beautiful Big Spring International Park.

The Big Spring in question is the very same one that allowed John Hunt to follow its path, eventually leading to his creation of Huntsville.

The park is therefore named because it surrounds one of Big Springs runoff lagoons.

With 12.5 acres of space to its name and a gorgeous limestone spring of historic significance, Big Spring International Park is a mix of old and new.

As you walk, youll spot a variety of interesting features that were gifts from other nations.

This includes cherry trees from Major General Mikio Kimata of Japan and a fog bell from Norway.

Burritt on the Mountain is set on a mountain overlooking Huntsville. The centerpiece of the estate is the magnificent 1930s mansion of Dr Burritt. Although Dr Burrit married three times, he had no heirs and left his estate to the city of Huntsville.

The estate now is now one of Huntsville Alabama wedding venues with great views over the city. It is also host to a set of original historic buildings from Alabamas past which operates as a living history museum.

One of the most fascinating buildings is a Rosenwald School one of the 5000 schools built between 1913 and 1932 to educate poor Black chldren. These schools were built with money from a Jewish philanthropist, Rosenwald, materials from Sears Roebucks and the ideas of African American educator, Booker T. Washington.

Among the Huntsville Alabama museums, Burritt on the Mountain is a living history museum which shows how people used to live in the days of old.

The Weeden House Museum is the oldest house open to the public in Alabama. The Weedens were cotton planters who used their Huntsville home as their winter town house. The house is exceptional because one of the 18th century Weedens did realistic life portraits of African-Americans of the time.

Take A Day Trip To Muscle Shoals

Just over an hours drive from Huntsville, so easily doable as a day trip, is Muscle Shoals, which many people visit on a musical themed road trip of the Southern States. The four cities of Muscle Shoals, Florence, Tuscumbia and Sheffield straddle the Tennessee river, but they merge together and are collectively known as The Shoals

Music lovers may have watched The Muscle Shoals documentary which celebrates the Fame Studios and Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, and the legendary artists who recorded there. You can visit both recording studios, hear their stories and soak up some of the musical history made by artists like The Rolling Stone, Aretha Franklin and Cher.

Other things to see in the area include the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Rosenbaum House and the Helen Keller Birthplace of Ivy Green. The downtown area of Florence has a pleasant centre of boutiques, restaurants and galleries and I can recommend the Gunrunner Boutique Hotel, with individual suites themed for legends of the music industry. For authentic Southern Fried chicken, stop at Champys Fried Chicken which often hosts live music in the evenings.
