When Should You Walk Across The Brooklyn Bridge

Best Free Things to Do for 4th of July Weekend in NYC

Well, you could walk over any time of day and be blown away. However, we strongly recommend you choose to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge either for sunrise or for sunset.

  • Sunrise No crowds, you might have the bridge to yourself, far more peaceful and the perfect opportunity for photos if you want one of just yourself on the bridge.
  • Sunset Very busy, electric atmosphere, unique experience and arguably more beautiful. Make sure you stay after sunset to see the bridge light up at night.

Planning to visit Brooklyn Bridge? Read our guides to Brooklyn Bridge at sunrise and walking Brooklyn Bridge at night.

Free Wednesdays At The Bronx Zoo

Submitted by Julie Dameron from Family Trips and Travels

Just a train ride away from Manhattan, the Bronx Zoo has over 265 acres to explore and more than 10,000 animals to see. Founded in 1899, the Bronx Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the United States and in 1916 opened the first modern zoo animal hospital. The Bronx Zoo focuses its mission on wildlife animal conservation and protecting its species.

The best part? Every Wednesday admission to the Bronx Zoo is free to all visitors! Hop on the #2 train and take a ride up for a full day excursion.

Make sure to pack a lunch if you want to keep things free, but theres also a food hall on site. Exploring the zoo can use up a lot of energy. There is a lot of ground to cover while seeing so many incredible exhibits. Check out World of Birds, Sea Lions, World of Reptiles, Baboon Reserve, African Plains, Himalayan Highlands, Tiger Mountain, and so much more.

For a small fee, there are also several add-on exhibits to choose from. The best offer will be the full experience which comes to around $17 for access to all exhibits. If you want to choose only one, go for the $7 monorail ride around the African Plains for an incredible view.

Whether youre a longtime resident of New York City or a first-time visitor, the Bronx Zoo is a great place to learn about wildlife and to see some of your favorite animals up close.

An Interactive Museum Tour For Theater Fans

Fable & Lark: Storied Adventures, which specializes in interactive museum tours inspired by great stories, is releasing its first post-pandemic tour, Staged: The Museum Tour for People who Love Theater. Staged looks at the development of theater through the lens of artwork in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, from early Greek statues of actors to depictions of stories that inspired Broadway musicals. Interspersed with activities and questions about theater, the tour takes participants across the museum and across cultures to see the ways artists have worked the theme of theater into their creations for thousands of years. Participants should bring their T game, and maybe even be prepared to do a little acting, because, after all, all the worlds a stage. Sundays at 11am.

Buy A Book In Strand Bookstore

Weekend Update: House Passes Bidenâs Stimulus Bill – SNL

Strand Bookstore is New York Citys incredibly popular independent bookstore lovers paradise.

It is located in a part of South Midtown with few other tourist attractions around, which means extra effort is required to reach the store.

However, even that doesnt keep the crowds away, so expect a long line to get inside.

What will you find inside? Oh, just the 18 miles of book shelves!

Head for Union Square 14th Street station and continue two blocks south on Broadway. Strand Bookstore is on E 12th Street.

Walk Along The Brooklyn Bridge

Perhaps one of the most iconic free things to do in NYC is to take a beyond scenic walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.

And that makes sense since this suspension bridge is a total icon that was first built in1869. Its also open twenty-four hours a day and offers visitors stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Just do yourself a favor and go as early as possible since it quickly becomes packed with absent-minded tourists.

Also, watch out for bikers , wear comfy shoes, and start in Brooklyn and then work your way into Manhattan so that you can nab awesome shots of the NYC skyline.

And since youll be in the DUMBO area anyway , dont forget to experience everything this amazing neighborhood has to offer since its easily one of my all-time favorite places in NYC.

Address: Brooklyn Bridge, New York, NY 10038

Hours: Open all day, every day.

How to Get There: Take the C train to High Street/Brooklyn Bridge station or the 2/3 train to High Street station and walk to the bridge from there.

Wednesdays At The Bronx Zoo

14 Great NYC Outdoor Dining Locations

Okay, this isnt one of the 100% free things to do in NYC. But, its pretty close and 110% worth your time since the Bronx Zoo is one of the finest animal research and conservation institutions in the entire world.

No really. Its a ridiculous 265 acres, is the countrys oldest/biggest zoo , and houses an insane 6000 different animals all of which reside in beautiful enclosures that mimic their natural habitat.

Plus, added bonus? They have some super cute gorillas and elephants too.

But the price tag can get a bit steep, especially when you add on a series of special exhibits that are not included in the price of general admission.

Thats why, if you can, try and visit on a Wednesday when the price of admission is a reasonable, pay what you wish fee.

Just brace yourself for the hordes of campers and school-age children who seem to take over this facility throughout the summer months .

Also, grab a free map before you enter the park since its ginormous. Trust me, it will be uber-handy since you can use it to plot out your days itinerary and figure out exactly which demonstrations/live animal feedings you want to see.

And if you have the money for it, definitely opt for the full experience ticket that will give you access to:

  • The popular 6.5-acre Congo Gorilla Forest
  • The Wild Asia Monorail
  • Treetop Adventure

Plus, if you happen to visit on a Wednesday, its just $10 for a ticket like this, which will give you access to all rides and park attractions.

Revisit The Statue Of Liberty

Located in the Lower Eastern region, the Statue of Liberty continues to be among the most sought-after activities in New York this weekend. Steeped way back in American history, it stands tall at 305 feet, brimming with eager tourists!

If you are looking for events and free things to do in NYC right now, hop on the Staten Island Ferry, from where you will be able to admire the statue free of cost.

While you are in the area, also plan a visit to Red Hook in Brooklyn, and board the widely-popular IKEA water taxi at Pier 11.

Take The Free Staten Island Ferry

The Staten Island ferry is a free passenger transporter carrying New Yorkers from Manhattan to the southernmost borough of Staten Island.

Look out for the gigantic orange ship in Hudson Bay and youve spotted the Staten Island Ferry.

Many first time visitors to New York take the free Staten Island ferry to get close up views over the Statue of Liberty without having to pay.

Its a great idea if youre traveling on a frugal budget but we have to say it is nothing like taking the tour of Liberty Island.

South Ferry red subway line terminal is where you can board the Staten Island ferry.

With just a few days in NYC we wouldnt recommend visiting Staten Island, theres just too much else to see and do. But if you have a week in the city, you can afford to spare a half day here.

Delving Into Summers Earworms

How to Speak

What is the song of the summer? The musicologist Nate Sloan and the songwriter Charlie Harding, who host the podcast Switched on Pop, arent in the business of issuing superlatives. Theyre more likely to ask why some of this years contenders songs by BTS, Lorde, Olivia Rodrigo, City Girls and more resonate the way they do.

This question animates their Summer Hits mini-series, which continues their podcasts project of explaining pops tricks in laymans terms and providing context for musical trends. In one Summer Hits episode, Sloan, Harding and their guest Hanif Abdurraqib discuss the structure of Lordes ebullient Solar Power and parse the debate about originality that it has inspired in another, they locate Olivia Rodrigos good 4 u within the long arc of punk and emo, with help from the critic Jessica Hopper. Their analysis may help you find new dimensions in these ubiquitous songs even if youve already heard them a few hundred times.OLIVIA HORN

Promenade On The High Line

Technically a public park, the High Line has the feel of a runway, where New Yorkers and tourists sashay for a stroll. Created from an abandoned stretch of elevated railroad track, this transformative 1.5-mile-long park stands 30 feet in the air, connecting the Meatpacking District with Chelseas galleries, before ending at gleaming Hudson Yards. Along the way, wonderful views open up of the Hudson River to the west, and of pedestrians on the sidewalks below. Keep an eye out for pop-up public art installations and events.

Inside Grand Central Terminal

Grand Central Terminal is the iconic New York City transit hub with a spectacular interior hall.

Youve more than likely seen Grand Central in movies, but it is so much more special to see it in person.

From the ornate arched bridge outside to the special exhibits on rotation throughout the year inside, this is one place you cant miss on your NYC itinerary.

Visit New Yorks Beaches

Yes, even in a city as urban and dense as New York, you can enjoy some wonderful beaches here! Just know that it requires going a bit further out on the subway.

The Rockaways in Queens are one of New Yorks most popular beach destinations, as well as a major surf hub.

And if youd rather stick to Brooklyn, hit up Coney Island for the amusement park goodness, or head next door for Soviet-flavored Brighton Beach.

Up in the Bronx, City Island is a fishing village that feels like a throwback to yesteryear a true gem.

Any of these beaches is the perfect place to enjoy a hot summer day in New York on the cheap!

While all of these beaches are accessible via subway and/or bus with a Metrocard, there are more expensive ways to get there faster like ferries from Lower Manhattan. Keep in mind whether you want to save time or money on your beach day in New York.
