Woodman Institute And Garrison House

Combining local history with a wider range of natural sciences and cultural exhibits, the privately endowed Woodman Institute complex is a delightful trove of surprises. The 1818 Woodman House is filled with collections of minerals, birds, shells, mammals, Native American artifacts, and Civil War items that include Abraham Lincoln’s saddle. An entire room is devoted to the extensive doll collection of a local teacher another to memorabilia from World War II.

In the adjoining 1813 home of Senator John Parker Hale are furnished rooms, police and fire memorabilia, nautical items, needlework, antique toys, and decorative arts, plus a fascinating collection of early photographs used to document pre-labor-law practices in New England’s mills, including child labor.

But the most precious of all is the last surviving fortified colonial garrison house, the William Damm Garrison, built in Dover in 1675 and preserved here under a portico. It is completely furnished with period artifacts, including tools, household equipment, furniture, and needlework. You can inspect all these at close range, even climbing the narrow steps to see the upper floor. You are also welcome to picnic on the museum’s lawns and enjoy the gardens.

Living History At Canterbury Shaker Village

One of the best things about the Canterbury Shaker Village is that visiting and exploring the grounds is free of charge, and guests have the option of taking one of the themed guided tours for a fee. In its heyday during the mid 19th-century, this village was home to over 300 men and women who were dedicated to communal living and ownership and practiced pacifism as part of their religious faith.

The grounds are home to numerous restored historic Quaker buildings, with 25 original structures and another four that are reconstructed. The oldest of the original structures is the Meeting House, which was built in 1792 and houses a Paul Revere bell, and the largest, which is the 56-room Dwelling House. Other notable structures are the Brethren’s House , Carpenter Shop , Infirmary , Carriage House , Enfield House , and the Fire House .

In addition to historic homes and buildings, the village has nearly 700 acres of countryside to explore. Trails of varying lengths and difficulty wander through fields and forests and past ponds and are also free to explore. Canterbury Shaker Village is located less than 20 minutes north of Concord just off Route 106.

The Flume Gorge In Franconia State Park

The Flume is an absolute must see in New Hampshire. Its a natural gorge that extends about 800 feet at the foot of Mount Liberty. Its a bit of an uneven, moderate uphill walk, but our kids, their spry grandma and the two of us managed it just fine. The kids loved the gushing waterfalls and moss-covered rocks and we loved the steep canyon walls as we got deeper into the gorge itself via the wooden walkways that take you into the heart of the gorge.

Interesting tidbit, the Flume was discovered in 1808 by 93 year old Aunt Jess Guernsey while she was fishing.

I was charmed by the 1886 covered bridge over the Pemigewasset River.

Tip: While youre in Franconia Notch State Park, budget some time to enjoy scenic Echo Lake with its nice beach and paddle boat rentals, and dont forget to also stop by the Basin, a large whirlpool naturally carved by rushing water.

Fly Through The Skies Above The Mountains

In New Hampshire, there is no shortage of activities to rock your sense of adventure. Many ski areas like Cranmore and Bretton Woods offer summer adventures for families looking for things to do with kids in NH. Gunstock Adventure Park, in New Hampshires Lake Region with views of Lake Winnipesaukee, has both zip lines and tree top aerial adventure courses for family fun. Several other operators, including Monkey Trunks, also have rope course options. Professional instructors will have you swinging on a ropes course or zip line in no time. To avoid disappointment, check for height and weight restrictions before telling the kiddos.

If being attached to ropes via a carabineer is not your style, perhaps an alpine slide will fill your adventure quota. There is an alpine slide and mountain coaster at Attitash Mountain Resort in Bartlett. Kids as young as 2, with a competent adult, can zoom down the hill in a tracked sled.

Ski Resorts provide great summertime activities: Discover why we love them.
