All You Can Eat Restaurants

All You Can Eat and Family Style eating are popular throughout the area. What is family style? You sit at a huge table with other restaurant patrons and enjoy a home-cooked country meal. Entrees and side dishes are served in bowls and on platters to be passed around, just like they would be during a family dinner at home. Everyone takes what they want, and passes it on. Please pass the green beans is actually a great conversation starter!

One well known family-style restaurant is Plain & Fancy Farm Restaurant, located on Old Philadelphia Pike between Bird-in-Hand and Intercourse Pennsylvania. Not hungry? Pick up a Shoofly Pie in the Country Store for later. Shoofly Pie is a molasses crumb cake baked in a pie shell that was popular with the Amish as a breakfast food. Pie for breakfast sounds like a great idea to us!

Does Bird-in-Hand sound familiar? A musical, Plain and Fancy, that ran on Broadway from 1955-1956 was set there. It depicted Amish life, including a barn-raising.

Pretzels Ice Cream And More

One of my favorite parts of Lancaster was the access to so many wonderful markets, roadside stands and locally made products during our visit to Amish Country, PA. Traveling with a young son means plenty of times for snacks! So where are the best places to eat in Lancaster you ask? Here are our favorites.

Fox Meadows Creamery:

The ice cream is made daily and in-house with milk from the farms cows. You can see the process through the glass windows in their shop with locally sourced specialty foods. With so many ice cream choices, you might need a scoop or two! Be sure to ask for a waffle cone too.

There is ample seating on the wrap around porch, in the garden or out near the playground. Youll have views of the surrounding farms while you enjoy your tasty selection of ice cream.

Bird-in-hand Bakeshop:

This is where you go when you need to pick up gifts for friends and family or some treats for yourself. They specialize in making homemade baked goods with a large selection of breads, cinnamon buns, cookies, whoopie pies, shoo-fly pies , and more! There is also homemade ice cream, seasonal crafts, gift items, canned goods and a playground nearby with picnic area and petting zoo.

*Please note the address, this is not the bakery located off Old Philadelphia Pike.

Another favorite is the pretzel truck that sits just outside. Be sure to bring cash and purchase a few pretzels because they are THAT good! Open only Wednesday-Saturday, so plan accordingly.

Sight & Sound Theatres

If you want to try an unconventional theatre, then you should go to Sight & Sound. This place totally breaks the traditional theater experience, so in addition to the classic actors, it uses special effects and animals in their shows.

We recommend this place for all those who are willing to experiment with an original theater show.

Strasburg Rail Road: Groffs Picnic Grove

Do your kids love watching trains and playing outside? Be sure to visit Grodds Picnic Grove located close to the Cherry Crest Adventure Farm. Pack a picnic to enjoy the shaded grassy fields with picnic tables and play structures for the kids.

Another delight is when the Strasburg Train passes through the Picnic Grove, picking up and dropping off passengers to enjoy the farm nearby. Hear the puffing of the engine and the toot of the horn as it passes through multiple times a day.

Visit The Amish Village

The food and the auction gave us an idea of what the Amish are all about, but we didnt to really get the full Amish experience and cultural immersion until we visited the Amish Village located in Ronks.

There are three different package options for the Amish Village. The Amish Farmhouse and Village tour takes you over 12 acres of village. Here you will find a one-room schoolhouse, barn with farm animals, blacksmith shop, smokehouse market, village store, windmill and a few other buildings. It will take you 25 minutes to explore the farmhouse. Plan on at least 30 more minutes to explore the rest of the village.

The second tour option is a bus tour along the back roads of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. During the 90 minute ride youll hear stories about Amish life, history, customs and culture. You will stop at at least one Amish home or business during the tour .

Want both? Choose the deluxe package which combines both options.

TravelingMom Tip: You can also do a guided house tour at The Amish Farm and House. It was the first tourist attraction in Lancaster and the first Amish attraction in the country. That puts it at the top of our list of things to do in Lancaster PA! Bonus: its located on Lincoln Highway which was Americas first toll road.
