Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve

Cleveland Attractions – How To Spend A Weekend In Cleveland

The Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve covers over 88 acres of what was once a lake-side dumping ground for solid waste. Amazingly, this unsightly dump site has blossomed to become an urban nature preserve alongside the Port of Cleveland, where you can bring the children to enjoy some outdoor fun in the sun. The preserve is home to three hiking trails which wind through a good mix of wildlife habitats including forests, grasslands, meadows and wetlands which attract a good mix of butterflies, birds, reptiles and small animals. It is a great place for children to enjoy nature, learn about bird-watching and get some outdoor exercise. Entrance is free.

Go For A Hike In Ohio’s National Park

Cuyahoga Valley National Park isn’t notable just for being the state’s only national park, but it’s also one of the most accessible national parks in the country near a major city. Just a short drive outside of Cleveland, one of the primary draws of the park is the 21-mile Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail that follows the Cuyahoga River. There is a lot of breathtaking nature in northern Ohio, but it’s hard to beat the beauty of Cuyahoga Valley with its waterfalls and historic farms. Spring and summer offer warm weather and swaths of flowers, but the fall foliage or sledding in the winter truly make this a four-season destination.

Wander Around Cleveland Public Square

The citys historic Public Square has been a part of the city since the late 1700s. It has recently been refurbished and features a cafe, amphitheater, lawn and ice rink. It hosts many of the citys large public events including concerts, rallies and parades.

On a historic note, the square once held the bodies of both Abraham Lincoln and James A. Garfield for public viewing after their deaths. Public Square has some impressive monuments to see. One to the citys founder Moses Cleaveland, another to its Soldiers and Sailors and the very grand, Fountain of Eternal Life, war memorial fountain.

Hike To Brandywine Falls

There are more than 70 waterfalls in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, but the 60-foot Brandywine Falls is by far the most popular.

The hike to the waterfalls is just 1.5 miles along the Brandywine Gorge Trail.

The trail is a loop and offers great views of Brandywine Falls, particularly in the fall as the leaves are changing colors.

If you dont want to hike to Brandywine Falls, there is an overlook near the Inn at Brandywine Falls.

For more waterfalls, try the .5-mile Buckeye Trail loop which leads to Blue Hen Falls.

You can also access Buttermilk Falls from this trail. Or, take the Bridal Veil Falls Trail. Its an easy .25-mile hike to the falls from the trailhead.

Holiday Inn Express Cleveland Downtown is unlike any other Holiday Inn Express that I have ever visited. It is truly a historic city hotel. Once the Guardian Bank Building, Holiday Inn Express Downtown Cleveland has the look of a 19th Century hotel. Take In An Indians Game

Clevelanders do love their sports teams. Two of my girls and I bought tickets to a Cleveland Indians game at the last minute on Friday night and had a fantastic time.

We were among a very small minority not wearing Indians t-shirts and we didnt see a single person wearing t-shirts or hats to cheer on the other team.

More than hot dogs and popcorn, Progressive Field offers all kinds of craft beers, cheesesteaks, nachos, even ballpark sundaes at Sweet Moses Ice Cream.

If you have time, sign up for a one-hour behind-the-scenes field tour, which is offered from May 2 September 2 and includes a look at the Press Box, Dugout, Batting Cages, Home Plate Club and more.

Worlds Largest Rubber Stamp

The top 5 restaurants on the water in Cleveland

Lucky-photographer / Shutterstock

If youre seeking for fun things to do in Cleveland, you really need to look no further than this singularly unique world-record-breaking, unusual item: a rubber stamp that measures 49 feet.

The stamp reads Free across its bottom in big red letters, a homage to the Soldiers and Sailors Monument of Cleveland opposite the building it is housed in.

The rubber stamp was commissioned by Alton Whitehouse, the CEO of Standard Oil of Ohio, in 1985.

Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, a wife and husband pair who are also well-known sculptors, created the gigantic piece to add a pop of color to the greyscale appearance of the 659-foot tall Sohio Building.

It wasnt until 1991 that this stamp was finally brought out of a warehouse and placed in downtown Cleveland, Ohio from a storage facility in Indiana.

It had waited there because Robert Horton, the CEO of British Petroleum a company that bought over Sohio did not approve of it.

Now, it waits in Willard Park, finally receiving the spotlight it deserves.
