Padre Island National Seashore

Padre Island, to the south of Corpus Christi, is the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world and stretches some 70 miles from end-to-end. This large area of stunning natural beauty encompasses 130,000 acres of spectacular beaches, sand dunes, and grassland habitats.

Thanks to its location along the Central Flyway a major migratory bird route it’s a birder’s paradise, and home to 350 different species. In fact, nearly half of all North American migratory bird species can be spotted here at certain times throughout the year. It’s also a haven for marine life such as sea turtles, including endangered species reintroduced to the area .

Best approached from the Malaquite Visitor Center, the shoreline is a wonderful place to visit for a few hours or even as part of an overnight camping trip. Also worth visiting is the stunning five-mile-long beach at Mustang Island State Park, a 3,954-acre park south of Port Aransas.

Commemorative Air Force Museum

The Commemorative Air Force Museum is dedicated, as the name suggests, to honoring those who fought in the Second World War, as well as educating visitors on all aspects of World War II history.

The museum has galleries that will take visitors through the most important events of this period of history, from the time before war was declared, right through to the fall of the Third Reich.

The museum also includes European and Asian history, and to that end there are also exhibits dedicated to the defeat of the Japanese Empire as well.

One of the most moving exhibits in the museum is the section that showcases the stories of the aviation pilots who belonged to the 201st Mexican Fighter Squadron, and you can also see period aircraft from World War II on display.

Things To Do In Brownsville Texas: Palmito Ranch Battlefield

Palmito Ranch Battlefield is a National Historical Landmark and a Civil War Battleground in southeastern Cameron County, near Brownsville. Today the battlefield is in an undeveloped and remote area, similar to how it appeared in 1865. For interpretation of the events that took place during the Battle, drivers and tourists can tune into 1610 AM, a local station added in 2011. There is some signage and markers along Boca Chica Highway – State Highway 4 indicating the location of the Battlefield. Each year, there is an event called Park Day that brings volunteers to the battlefield to clean and repair the grounds for future visitors.

Aransas National Wildlife Refuge

The 70,000-acre Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, along the Texas Gulf coast sits approximately 50 miles north of Corpus Christi. Established as a winter home for endangered whooping cranes, the refuge is also home to alligators, snakes, and numerous other species of birds living among the area’s expansive tidal flats, salt marshes, grasslands, and freshwater ponds.

The refuge also has easy walking trails. There’s also a scenic, one-way road that offers easy access and plenty of opportunities to stop and admire the views, including an observation tower with scopes for birders.

Fort Brown served as a military post for the United States Army during the American Civil War and then much later during the border conflicts between the United States and Mexico. The Brownsville Museum of Fine Art began as the Brownsville Art League in 1935. During this time eight Brownsville women met in each others homes to talk about their love of art. The Historic Brownsville Museum first opened its doors in 1986 and is housed in what used to be a Spanish Colonial Revival passenger depot that was abandoned.
