Nowadays Maymont is known as one of the jewels in the crown of the city of Richmond, and is a great place to come with youngsters.

The center is an ode to art and architecture as well as the flora and fauna of the region and you can tour the mansion that sits on the grounds, or just go for a wander through the gorgeous flower gardens.

The river goes through Maymont and you can sometimes find otters swimming in the waters, or you can play with the animals on the farm that sits in the grounds.

Agecroft Hall Richmond Va

Overlooking the James River in Richmond, Agecroft Hall is a beautiful replica of the original Elizabethan manor house that rested on the banks of the River Irwell in Lancashire, England. Standing as a tribute to our rich history, Agecroft Hall was built in a combination of Tudor and 20th century styles, incorporating many features and decorative elements of the original house in England. Its interior features opulent furnishings, period paintings, and ornate wood panelings.

Stroll Through Church Hill Historic District

For an impression of what Richmond was like before the Civil War, visit the streets east of the State Capitol, beyond I-95, where you’ll find about 70 antebellum houses and St. John’s Episcopal Church, built in 1741. It was here that patriot Patrick Henry made his famous speech, which coined the slogan, “Give me liberty or give me death” during the Second Virginia Convention.

This is the oldest church in the city, and you can take a guided tour of its highlights. The oldest building in Richmond is The Old Stone House at 1914 East Main Street, built in 1737. It now houses the Edgar Allan Poe Museum, remembering the poet and author who lived in Richmond for several years and worked on a local newspaper. Some of his original manuscripts, documents, and personal items are displayed in the museum.

Boating And Swimming In Downtown Richmond

Riverside Outfitters runs an outpost near Browns Island that rents kayaks and SUPs in the summer. You can also swim in the river from Tredegar Beach, at the edge of Brown’s Island. This is a nice calm area for kids to splash around as long as you don’t venture out into the main flow. Also note that swimming is prohibited if the water level reaches 9 feet, and life jackets are required at 5 feet and up. Also, avoid swimming after heavy rains as run-off can mean unsafe bacteria levels.

During our visit to Richmond and Wayne County, we had the pleasure of visiting Abbotts Candies Factory. If you dont know, his caramels are absolutely amazing and are the best-selling candy in stores, but watching them being made was so cool.

Each caramel is hand-cut and wrapped , and the process, while perhaps more efficient by machine, shows the companys commitment to quality.
