The park is open year-round for outdoor adventures, but pets are not permitted. For trail maps and fee information, please visit the New Hampshire State Parks website.

John Paul Jones was a revolutionary war hero who lived in Portsmouth at two different stages of his life. What is now called the John Paul Jones House was once the sea captains home and a boarding house. Jones rented a room there while his warship was being built. Peirce Island And Four Tree Island
Only a short walk from Prescott Park lies Peirce Island and neighboring Four Tree Island. A bridge from downtown Portsmouth NH connects the mainland to Peirce Island, and you can walk across to the smaller Four Tree Island from Peirce Island. There are many beautiful walking paths and wonderful views of the river. Its a very peaceful spot in the city. Both parks are on my list of the best Portsmouth attractions for nature lovers.

Cruises From Portsmouth Harbor
The best views of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse and historic Fort Constitution, which has guarded the entrance to Portsmouth Harbor since colonial times, are from the water. Harbor cruises begin at Portsmouth’s downtown docks near Market Street, where you can also board cruises to the Isles of Shoals, a small group of islands that are divided between New Hampshire and Maine.
While the islands are all privately owned, some cruises do allow landing on Star Island. Cruises to visit Celia Thaxter’s Island Garden on Appledore leave from New Castle, near Fort Constitution. On any of these, you’ll learn the fascinating history of the fort.

The Warner House, also known as the Macpheadris-Warner House, is now a museum. It was built from 1716 to 1718, making it the oldest brick house in northern New England. It was originally built for Captain Archibald Macpheadris and housed six generations of extended family.
During that time, daughter Mary Macpheadris Osborne refurnished the house into the most chic decor of the time. In 1932, the house was purchased and became a museum, just before an oil company tried to buy the house to tear it down for a gas station. It was a close call!

Templeman Coolidge, who donated it to the State of New Hampshire in 1954. There is also a great 1.5-mile walk along Little Harbor Trail that offers views of Portsmouth and the ocean.
