Castle in the Clouds is a historic estate about a 30-minute drive away from Meredith that has opened its doors to visitors.

The staff has incredible knowledge about the history of the property as well as its original occupants.

It was built in 1913-1914 over an 18 month period by a man named Thomas Plant. Plant had made his fortune running a shoe company and decided to retire early with his second wife Olive in the mountains of New Hampshire where hed acquired a large estate.

Today, the building is cared for by the Castle Preservation Society that takes care of preservation and restoration efforts on the property. The top two floors have been beautifully restored and present a rich history of the area, as well as a vision of what it wouldve been like to live in that area.

There are some surprisingly modern amenities, such as a central vacuum, showers in the upstairs bathrooms that dont look so different from today, and a refrigeration system.

The grounds of the estate include miles of carriage trails where you can walk and hike. There is also a stable that offers horseback riding, if you prefer to explore on horseback.

Peruse The Galleries Of An Art Museum

Yes, NH actually has a good arts scene! While there are plenty of nice options, two institutions really stand out: the Currier Museum of Art, and the Hood Museum of Art. Both of them are beautiful museums with world-class collections.

The Currier has a strong European and American collection.

The Hood Museum in Hanover is a Dartmouth College institution, and as such has really strong ties to Dartmouths history and community. But with a collection of over 65,000 pieces ranging from European, Indigenous Australian, Asian, and African art, the Hood Museum offers a powerful diversity of perspectives.

Having previously worked for this museum myself, I can proudly say its an impressive institution.
