Take Surf Lessons In Kihei
Contributed by Monica from Planner at Heart
Kihei in South Maui is known as one of the best spots for beginner surfers, explaining the abundance of surf schools.
Located next to Kalama Park is Cove Beach Park where the surf break has tiny, gentle waves perfect for beginners.
Even with plenty of surf schools to choose from, its best to book and reserve your lesson in advance.
Most range in price from $60 to $100 for an hours lesson, with private lessons ranging from $150 to $200. If youre travelling with a group, call around and ask what options are available for group bookings.
During our last Maui trip, we rented a house in a Kihei neighbourhood with friends that happened to be within walking distance to Kalama Park.
We booked a surfing lesson, and while walking back to our house, we learned that our instructor lived directly across the street. He came over on the night we rented karaoke equipment and sang songs with us.
Thats the beauty of Kihei, Maui, and the Aloha spirit!
Kayak And Snorkel With Sea Turtles
Maui is home to many sea turtles, and getting up close with them is one of the fun things to do in Maui for couples. A great way to see these marine creatures is via a kayak and snorkel tour.
On the tour, a guide will lead you to areas in South Maui known to be home to sea turtles. You can spot them from your kayak and hop in the water to snorkel with them.
Youll enjoy breathtaking views of the West Maui Mountains and Haleakala National Park too.
Eat Like A Local In Wailuku
What better way to get involved in the culture of Maui than through its food? Head to the town of Wailuku, with its old, historic neighbourhoods, where you can hit up a whole load of authentic food joints. Youll find a whole lot of Asian and Pacific Islander influence on the gastronomic scene here.
Expect fresh local ingredients and spices at the variety of places to eat here. Everything from fresh fish tacos and saimin , to chicken katsu curry and hot malasadas. You could even wash it all down with some beers at the local family-run brewery. Definitely one of our favourite things to do in Maui!

Attend A Luau For An Unforgettable Evening
Contributed by Theresa from Fueled By Wanderlust
A popular Maui activity is attending a luau. This lively cultural experience makes for a fun evening, whether for a couple, family, or group of friends.
Attending a luau gives you an intimate look at a beloved Hawaiian tradition as you discover local legends and cuisine.
Booking a luau with a reputable company, like Old Lahaina Luau, will ensure you receive an authentic experience.
The luau begins close to sunset, where you will be presented with a fresh lei when you arrive. You can choose to sit at a traditional low table with cushions for seating or a regular dining table and chairs.
As golden hour sets in, you will have the opportunity to take photos as you sip drinks and listen to local island music. Then, as the sun disappears over the horizon, dinner is typically served buffet style.
There will be an abundance of traditional Hawaiian dishes, with the star being pork that is roasted on hot stones underground.
The night will close with an enthralling show that combines hula dancing, traditional costumes, and storytelling.
You are guaranteed to have an unforgettable evening where you will leave with a better understanding of Hawaiian history and customs.
Tickets cost from $135 per person, and reservations book up months in advance. The duration of the luau is typically three hours. Be sure to bring your appetite for the copious amounts of food!
Finding A Place In Maui
Where to stay on Maui? That’s a good question if you’re planning a visit to The Valley Isle. Maui is divided into several areas where the major resorts are located, and each has pros and cons when it comes to your accommodations.
First, lets get a lay of the land that is Maui. Maui isnt a huge island, at about 48 miles long and 26 miles wide, but it still takes a solid half-day to drive around the island, not that anyone does that, but it should give you some idea of the size. Maui is 728 square miles in size and can ultimately be divided into a couple of useful regions: West Maui, South Maui, East Maui , Central Maui, and Upcountry Maui. The two major resort areas are located in West and South Maui, so well focus on those areas below.
Your journey on Maui likely began in central Maui at Kahului Airport , nestled between Haleakala to the east and the West Maui mountains to the west this valley isthmus is why they call Maui the Valley Isle. Besides picking up your rental car here, youll also find shopping resources like Costo, Walmart, and Whole Foods in central Maui. This isnt the only location for grocery shopping, though, so dont feel like you have to pick up all your supplies in Kahului.
On this page, we’ll cover each of the major Maui regions you can find accommodations within. Here are this page’s highlights…
