Take A Tour From The Breckenridge Heritage Alliance

I love history and the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance members know all about Brecks colorful past. In addition to managing several historic residences in town that are free to visit, they also offer guided hikes and historic tours. Here are three of our favorites.

Haunted Tour of Breckenridge. Life in 1800s Breckenridge was hard, and several folks met with untimely deaths, although according to locals, not everyone has departed.

The Haunted Tour of Breckenridge is more historical than scary, but there are a few stories that make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. The ghost stories also give a glimpse of real life in a western mining town and what it took to survive.

Stories of prostitution, cannibalism and gruesome mining accidents are part of this tour, although guides leave any detail to your imagination. We took my 8-year-old and it was fine, he focused more on the ghosts than the story of their mortal counterpart.

Preston Mill Ghost Town Tour. Visiting a ghost town was on my list when we came to Colorado, so I was super excited about this hike that includes a picnic lunch.

The hike itself has some steeper inclines that might take younger kids a bit longer, but its not difficult and the guide goes at a leisurely pace. Along the way to the former town of Preston Mill, you pass abandon gold mines and equipment, a nice diversion if your child is like my youngest and balks at the mention of hike.

The Changing Of The Leaves

Fall is a popular time for leaf-peeping all over the U.S., but in Breckenridge, those aspens start to glow with a golden hue as early as September, making early fall arguably the most beautiful time of year to visit Breckenridge.

The green spruce, fir, and pine-covered peaks of the Colorado Rockies become dotted with golden yellow, bright orange, and fiery red as the groves of brilliant aspens change colors.

With the bright candy-blue of the skies and the soaring peaks of the Tenmile Mountain Range in the background, visitors flock to the trails and take leisurely scenic drives to see the vibrant colors of the green, orange, and yellow that lights up the season.

One nice area to view the changing of the colors is the French Gulch pass through Breckenridges Golden Horseshoe. This area became famous for its gold, which was discovered in the area in 1859, launching Breckenridge into Gold Rush notoriety.

Hiking and mountain biking are the most intimate ways to see the fall gold, but another scenic drive is the Boreas Pass, which starts in Breckenridge and weaves over 11,400 feet to the top of the Continental Divide.

Book at least an hour for this stunning drive to gawk at the Aspen Tunnel and the jaw-dropping vistas of the surrounding valleys and peaks. Much of Boreas Pass turns to a graded dirt road, but it should be fine for most vehicles.

From getting the history of mining in the area and getting to pan for AND FIND GOLD, its a unique thing to do in Breckenridge and is great with kids or just adults.
